It's hard to get a decent picture of a dragonfly that won't settle when you're being eaten by other insects but ... is this a Violet Dropwing? The picture was taken by the bridge at the inland end of Cami Volantina where StewB had seen them. We're now back in the UK - cold, wet and miserable...

    Mallorca 2023

Walked up the Vall de Colonya from Pollenca today. Best two sightings were a Black Vulture and a Monarch butterfly. Also red kite, raven, kestrel, probably a peregrine ... and two very distant eagles. Also a stonechat.

    Mallorca 2023

Did the Fishermans Walk from CSV yesterday and saw a pair of Blue Rock Thrushes and a few Sardinian Warblers. Heard Crossbills. The usual Audouin's Gull was on the beach. Today we walked the back roads from Pollenca to Puerto Pollensa. Not much bird life, but a good supply of odonata. And...

    Mallorca 2023

We'll be back at Cala San Vicente tomorrow for a week. Looks like it might be birding from a sun lounger unless it cools down a bit! We did see a Roller from the hotel in May though ..

    Mallorca 2023

Walked the back roads from Pollensa to PP yesterday ... saw a Marsh Harrier displaying. Also Woodchat Shrike and heard Bee-eaters. One very dark eagle ... immature Bonelli's? Off back to the UK today ... for some sunshine ...

    Mallorca 2023

Walked up the Vall de Colonya from Pollensa yesterday. Lots of Nightingales, which we've not heard there in previous years. Two Hoopoes, 1 Woodchat Shrike, 2 Red-rumped Swallows with the House Martins. Several Corn Buntings. Flycatchers everywhere. Ravens and a Red Kite. And a Monarch...

I guess it was you that we met ... and agreed how quiet it was. Glad things livened up for you. We saw more frogs than birds!

    Mallorca 2023

Sitting on our room balcony in Cala San Vicente this morning waiting for the weather to decide what it was going to do ... saw the usual Audouin's Gull and an Eleonora's Falcon. Then Gill said what's that big blue bird ... just gone behind the tree. Fortunately it reappeared a couple of hours...

    Mallorca 2023

W're looking forward to resuming our annual May trips to Cala San Vicente next week and catching up on spring birds. Do you still go to the Albercutz Tower, Mike?

    Mallorca 2022

Walked up Vall de Colonya from Pollensa today. Lots of small birds vanishing into olive trees, but did see Hoopoe, Red Kite, lots of Ravens, two Stone Curlews and a mystery raptor. Looked most like a Bonelli's Eagle, but was flying away by the time we saw it.

    Birding Ibiza

I now see why no-one replied to my last post - there aren't many birds around in October! We walked the coast both ways from Santa Eularia, and had a day down at Ses Salines - where we hardly saw a thing. We did see: House Sparrow Blackbird Yellow Legged Gull Collared Dove Wood Pigeon...

    Birding Ibiza

We're coming to Ibiza in mid-October ... as a change from Mallorca. Staying at Santa Eulalia. Any recommendations for good places for birds, accessible by bus, ferry, walking?

Is this a locust or some sort of grasshopper? Seen at Albufera today.

    Mallorca 2019

Good to be back in Cala San Vicent once more. There seem to be fewer birds around this year, but 2 Egyptian Vultures and an Eleanora's Falcon this morning rather made up for it. Lots of Nightingales at Can Curassa yesterday.

    Mallorca 2018

Mike - thanks very much for the offer, but we're not arriving until Tuesday so sadly it won't work. I wasn't thinking of walking all the way! A bus to ses Salines/Lombards or to Cala Lombards, then walk, was what I had in mind. Also, is it worth having a boat trip out to Cabrera? Pancho44.

    Mallorca 2018

We're coming to Mallorca next week, to Cala D'Or instead of our usual Cala San Vicent. We hope to make it out to Cap Salines. As we don't hire a car, which is the best way to walk there ... birdwise? Or would cycling be a good option? Pancho44.

    Mallorca 2018

Apologies to all ... must be jet lag! I meant to type Olivaceous ... not Orphean.

    Mallorca 2018

Back home now after two weeks in Mallorca. Best event was a Raven mobbing a Black Vulture! Went to Albercutz on Friday 25th, but it was very windy. Just four Red Kites and a Booted Eagle. But on our way down to the bus stop we briefly came across a long, thin warbler. Pale brown-grey above...
