Identification
12.5cm. A distinctive Manakin.
Male
- Red patch on forehead
- Red lower back to uppertail-coverts
- Black rest of upperparts including most of wings (rest of wings olive)
- Black tail with central feather pair elongated and pointed
- Pale greyish rear part of head, paler underparts
- Some blackish streaks on flanks
Female
- Olive upperparts
- Grey face and throat
- Light greyish-olive underparts
Juveniles resemble females.
Distribution
South America: found only in south-eastern Brazil (Espírito Santo to Paraná and eastern Santa Catarina).
Uncommon to locally fairly common.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Atlantic forest.
Occurs up to 1200m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on small fruits and insects. Plucks or snatches food in aerial sally.
Regularly accompanies mixed-species flocks.
Breeding
Little information about breeding. Breeding season probably November to February. The male dispalys solitarily in a small arena. The nest is a shallow basket, placed 4m above the ground.
Movements
A resident species.
