Francolinus castaneicollis

Identification

Length 33-37 cm; a large francolin.

Key features are rusty colours on the head, neck, upper breast and wings; white belly and vent; and red bill and legs.

Distribution

Eastern Africa: Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.

Taxonomy

Pternistis vs. Francolinus

Sibley & Monroe (1996) placed this species in the genus Pternistis, but this genus has not been recognized by Clements (2007) or Howard & Moore (2003), and the Opus follows in this consensus.

Subspecies:

Francolinus castaneicollis has four subspecies: castaneicollis, kaffanus, ogoensis and atrifrons.

Habitat

Montane heath, forest edges and scrub.
