Identification
30 cm
- White head and body
- Black cap and facial markings
- Pale grey upperparts
- Dark primaries and wing coverts (creating a M mark over the back)
- White underwing with dark edges
- Dark grey tail
- Dark half collar on breast
- Short black hooked bill
- Pink legs and feet with dark patches
Distribution
Volcano, Bonin (Japan) and western Hawaiian islands; ranges to Polynesia
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Pelagic, except when breeding.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet consists mostly of fish and squid.
Breeding
Both adults dig a 1-3m burrow nest in sand. The single egg is incubated by both parents for 50 days. The young fledge about 80 days later.
