Identification

Small woodpecker with short black bill and a slight nuchal crest.Black plumage with white bars (finer on the under parts.),pale buff rump and fulvous head diagnostic.Male has red malar stripe as shown in the first picture.Size-7.5inchs(19cm)

Tenasserim(Myanmar) and the Malay Pensular to the Greater Sundas.

Forests and forest edges.

Behaviour

Usualy frequents the canopy ,solitarily or in pairs.(some times a family group).Generally unobtrusive.Soimetimes forges with mixed species flocks.-Voice- a rapid trill ki-i-i-i-i-i- and also a single chit in flight.
