Alternative name: Grey Pileated Finch
- Coryphospingus pileatus
Identification
Light grey above and greyish-white below, black crown with a scarlet stripe. The female lacks this black and scarlet on the crown. Both sexes have a narrow white eye-ring.
Distribution
South America in three-four separate areas:
-A spot in southern Colombia
-Northern Colombia and Venezuela
-Eastern and southern Brazil (well south of the Amazon River)
-Uncertain records in French Guiana
Taxonomy
Three subspecies are recognized[1]:
- C. p. rostratus
- Colombia (arid upper Magdalena Valley)
- C. p. brevicaudus
- N Colombia to n Venezuela; Isla Margarita
- C. p. pileatus
- E-cent. Brazil (Ceará and Piauí to Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro)
Habitat
Forest edge, second growth, other disturbed areas; always in lowlands
Behaviour
Feeds low to the ground
