Identification

30-36cm
Male

  • Streaked grey upperparts
  • Streaked white underparts
  • Barred thighs
  • Red eyes

Female larger

  • Rufous breast and underwing coverts
  • Yellow eyes

Juvenile

  • Grey face
  • Brown upperparts
  • Yellow eyes

Distribution

East and South-East Asia. Breeds in Korea and in central, eastern and southern China and on Taiwan. Resident on Taiwan and in southern China but a summer visitor to remainder of breeding range. Occurs on passage throughout eastern and southern China and on the Ryukyu Islands.

Winters south to Burma and Thailand, Indochina, the Philippines and south to the Greater Sundas and the western New Guinea islands.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Forest and forest edge, open country, mangrove swamps.

Diet

The diet includes frogs and lizards.
