Identification

25cm

  • Bare scarlet eye skin
  • Red legs

Male

  • Slightly larger
  • Metallic green upperparts
  • Glossy dark blue below
  • Brown wing panel
  • Tall red crest
  • White spot on forehead
  • Black frontal bristles

Female

  • Green body
  • Grey head
  • Brown wing coverts
  • Dark bill

Distribution

South Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, south Thailand, and Borneo.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.

Habitat

Lowland rainforests.

Behaviour

It nests in a ground scrape which it lines with leaves, hidden under leaf litter. 5-6 white eggs are laid and are incubated for 18 days.

The diet includes invertebrates, seeds and fruit.

Vocalisation

Song: whistled si-ul.
