Identification
From Wreathed Hornbill by smaller size,larger and more prominent reddish casque(in male) and black basal half of tail with the rest pale brownish.Bill yellowish;orbital skin blue.
Male-White neck and gular pouch.
Female-Black head and neck,pale blue gular pouch.
Underwing flight pattern all black wings,belly, and basal half of the tail with pale brownish tail distinctive.
Size-81cm.
Distribution
The Malay Peninsula to Sumatra and Borneo.
Uncommon to rare in many areas, locally common in Borneo and Sumatra. Threatened throughout range due to rapid depletion of lowland rainforest.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
May form a superspecies with Walden's Hornbill, Writhed Hornbill and Knobbed Hornbill and even sometimes considered conspecific with Walden's Hornbill.
Formerly placed in the genus Aceros.
Habitat
Lowland evergreen forest.
Behaviour
Feeds on fruit and some animal items when available.
Frequents the canopy in small groups, flying vast distances between roosting and feeding. Gathers to feed in fruiting trees.
Breeding little known. Nests in a natural cavity in a large tree.
