Central and South America: found from Panama to Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru.

Four to five subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • C. b. micans:
  • C. b. buffonii:
  • North-central Colombia (Magdalena Valley) and north-western Venezuela
  • C. b. aeneicauda:
  • North Colombia (Santa Marta region) and northern Venezuela
  • C. b. caeruleogaster:
  • Eastern slope of the central Eastern Andes of Colombia
  • C. b. intermedia:
  • Subtropical south-western Ecuador and north-western Peru (Tumbes)

The subspecies intermedia has in the past been treated as a full species or as a subspecies of Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer.

Habitat

Various forest types - mixed evergreen and deciduous; dry, moist and wet forests, forest edges, semi-open and secondary growth, as well as coffee plantations. Observed at heights around 234 m.

Their main diet consists of nectar from various tree sources.
