Aepyornis maximus

Identification

A large Ostrich like bird. 3 metres in height.

  • Long neck
  • Bristled feathers
  • Spear like bill


Extinct since the 16th century.

Distribution

Madagascar.

Taxonomy

Fossil species.

Habitat

Forests.

Behaviour

Flightless.

It is likely that fruits formed part of the diet.

Very large (91cm circumference) pale blue eggs were laid.
