Identification
28-29 cm.
- Blackish crown, nape, head-sides and neck, finely mottled white
- White throat, intensely marked with black
- Ruddy brown breast with small white spots
- Greyish white belly variably marked with black
- Whitish undertail-coverts with dark bases
- Dull brown upperparts, narrowly barred blackish
- Large black spotting on scapulars, tertials and wing-coverts
- Distinctive flank pattern: all black with narrow white bars
- Bright red bill and duller eyering
Amount of white on head very variable, especially on throat, with northern populations normally showing more white than those of south.

Endemic to the mountains of Sumatra, Indonesia.
