Identification
16cm.
Distribution
Asia: found in China, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas and Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
This is a polytypic species, consisting of three subspecies[1]:
- P. n. kangrae:
- Western Himalayas (Kashmir to Garhwal)
- P. n. nipalensis:
- P. n. intensicolor:
This last subspecies intensicolor is not recognosed by all authorities, and is generally considered to be invalid[2]
Formerly placed in the genus Carpodacus.
Habitat
Boreal forest and high-altitude shrubland and mountain cliffs. Observed at heights around 12000ft.
