We suggest that "headline" photos should have longest dimension 550 px and others should be 350 px. Go for a resolution of 90 dpi (i.e. slightly more than the oft-quoted 72 for higher resolution devices). It's a good idea to crop and/or resize your photos like this before uploading them. If the above is true, you will need to find a convenient place in the article to add your photo. You can change which 'side' the photo appears on by changing 'right' to 'left'. You can also adjust the size of the image by changing '350px' - we would however recommend not exceeding 350px for additional photos.

Adjust the size of the image by changing it to '''350px''' - we recommend additional photos shouldn't exceed this on their longest dimension.

Step One: Preparing your photo

We suggest that "headline" photos should have longest dimension 550 px and others should be 350 px. Go for a resolution of 90 dpi (i.e. slightly more than the oft-quoted 72 for higher resolution devices). It's a good idea to crop and/or resize your photos like this before uploading them. Smaller, pre-prepared images have 2 main advantages:

  • Quicker upload/smaller storage requirements
  • Helps protect copyright as image is relatively low res

Even so, this pre-prep isn't essential and we don't cover how to do it here (there are many free apps / free software programmes which you can use).

Step Two: Uploading your photo

  • Look in the navigation options on the (bottom) right hand side of the page for the 'toolbox' section. This has a link to 'Upload file'. If you can't see it, try here:

Welcome

Click it and follow the instructions...

  • Click 'browse' and find the photo on your computer
  • Please change the 'destination name' to something descriptive. 'Black Swift (young female).jpg is much better than 'DSC0023.jpg' or '001.jpg'!
  • In the summary field, you may wish to add the photographer's username, the place where the photo was taken, and any other relevant details. Also add the url of the picture showing the Gallery or thread location.
  • Click 'Upload file'
  • The page should then show 'Successful upload'. Copy the filename as it appears. Note this may have changed from the one you specified—e.g. spaces replaced with underscores.

Step Three: Adding the Image to a page

  • Find the relevant page where you want to put the photo by searching for it or looking it up.
  • Click 'edit' at the top of the page.

2a) If there is no photo on that page

If there is no photo on the page, add your image as the main photo. To do this, place the following code at the very top of the page:

[[File:FILENAME.jpg|thumb|550px|right|(SEX, AGE, SUBSPECIES)<br />Photo &copy; by {{user|PERSON+WHO+TOOK+IT|PERSON WHO TOOK IT}}<br />LOCATION AND COUNTRY, DAY, MONTH, YEAR]]

where the...

  • FILENAME is the filename of your photo that you copied in step one
  • (SEX, AGE, SUBSPECIES): the main caption, including any important notes about the photo
  • PERSON WHO TOOK IT is the original photographer
  • SMALL TEXT PLACED BELOW PHOTO IF NEEDED to give more information (eg Location, Date)
  • The copyright symbol is coded by the following:
&copy;

2b) If there is already a photo on that page

If there is already a photo on the page, your image needs to be different enough to warrant its addition. For example, a photo of the opposite gender, or one demonstrating a particular characteristic of that bird.

Now find a convenient place in the article to add your photo and place linking code based on the example above there. You can change which 'side' the photo appears on by changing 'right' to 'left'. Adjust the size of the image by changing it to 350px - we recommend additional photos shouldn't exceed this on their longest dimension.
