- Hemixos flavala
Identification
Short dark crest lightly mottled ashy in most races. Dusky lores and malar and white throat contrasting with pale greyish-brown breast diagnostic. Belly and undertail coverts white. Upperparts brownish-grey. Wings with a yellowish patch.
Similar species
Mantle and auriculars much duller than in the related Chestnut Bulbul. Cinereous Bulbul, at least in the main subspecies, lacks yellow wing panel.
Distribution
Asia: Found from the East Himalayas east to southern China and south to south-eastern Vietnam and western Thailand.
Taxonomy
Five subspecies are recognized[1].
- H. f. flavala - eastern Himalayas (Garhwal to Nepal); western Yunnan and southwest Myanmar
- H. f. hildebrandi - northern Myanmar to northwest Thailand
- H. f. davisoni - Central Myanmar to southwest Thailand
- H. f. bourdellei - southwest China (southern Yunnan) to eastern Thailand and northern Laos
- H. f. remotus - southern Vietnam (Bolavens and Langbian plateaux)
Cinereous Bulbul (Hemixos cinereus) was recently split from this species.
Habitat
