Meiglyptes tristis

Location: F.R.I.M. ,Sg Buloh,Selangor,Malaysia

Identification

Small woodpecker with short black bill and a slight nuchal crest. Black plumage with white bars (finer on the under parts), pale buff rump and fulvous head diagnostic. Male has red malar stripe as shown in the first picture. Size-7.5 inches (19cm).

Distribution

Tenasserim(Myanmar) and the Malay Peninsula to the Greater Sundas.

Taxonomy

There are 2 subspecies.

Habitat

Forests and forest edges.

Behaviour

Usualy frequents the canopy ,solitarily or in pairs, some times a family group. Generally unobtrusive. Sometimes forges with mixed species flocks.

Vocalisation

Voice - a rapid trill ki-i-i-i-i-i- and also a single chit in flight.
