Identification
14-18 cm. Black upperparts, whitish-rufous underparts, broad black ear coverts and black outer thighs.
Distribution
Southern Asia: breeds in southern Tenasserim, peninsular Thailand and Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Bali, Singapore and Borneo. Now scarce in Java and Bali.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Treated as a race of Collared Falconet M. caerulescens by some authors.
Habitat
Forest edge and secondary-growth woodland up to 1,200m, sometimes close to human habitation. Resident.
Behaviour
The diet includes small birds and insects.
It breeds in tree holes.
