Visiting DR in January - Puerto Plata (1 Viewer)

I will be staying with family at an all-inclusive, but intend on doing as much birding as possible.

Can anyone recommend any sites near-by. I realize a lot of tours are done around SW Dominican Republic, but can I expect to see some interesting Caribbean / Dominican endemics near Puerto Plata?

Let me know what your experiences were like.

Please and thanks

Firstly, there is a good site guide by Kirwan et al that came out a couple of years ago for the Greater Antilles (Cuba to Puerto Rico). That will be a good place to start. If you have an iphone or ipad, there is a small "birds of Haiti" app that I also found helpful in DR.

You should be able to get some Caribbean endemics wherever you are in DR. If you rent a car, hire a taxi, or some other way of getting around, more. I have not been to Puerto Plata, so cannot say anything specific for that corner.

Niels,

Thanks for responding. Many people who've birded DR (outside of this forum) recommend birding in the South West hotspots. I get it, but I am convinced that I'll get 20-30 life birds despite not being in the sexiest region.

I have my bird guide, I am listening to the calls, and I should do alright.

I don't have amazing camera equipment, but I plan on giving some kind of report of my findings.
