Richard Lydekker, 1891
Catalogue of the Fossil Birds in the British Museum (Natural History)
London, British Museum XXVII 368 pg.
Remark: Described as an Ardeidae, transferred to the Presbyornithidae by Harrison and Walker 1978 and Harrison 1979, Olson didn't agree with this so Mlíkovský 2002 placed the species in Aves Incertae Sedis until the species is restudied.

Well found Laurent, I really like these finds.
Glad to help, Fred.
For species that were described in a new genus, I actually already have the data in most cases -- I'm just taking it in my "genus group names" file and pasting it here.

Ameghino 1894 Boletín del Instituto Geográfico Argentino synonymized Stephanornis with Phorusrhacos; but Brodkorb 1967 Catalogue of fossil birds : part 3 ( Ralliformes, Ichthyornithiformes, Charadriiformes ) suggested it to be a synonym of Brontornis.)

Fred (and Laurent), neither I can find Mercerat's Note sur la Géologie de la Patagonie (1893), at least not more than the cover ;)[alt. see below].

D_NQ_NP_2X_876271-MLA27513976214_062018-F.jpg
455$ is, to say the least, a bit much for 12 pages! 😳

The Stephanornis taxon seems to be expected to be found on page 5, and note (if relevant); that the Author's (given) name in this publication is/was typed Alcide [sic] Mercerat, and that the Print location is/was typed "Buenos Ayres", on the cover itself.

However, shortly thereafter (in February 1894), Florentino Ameghino list this work as:
MERCERAT A. Note sur la Géologie de la Patagonie, in 12 de 6 pages. (L’auteur croit prabable que les oiseaux fossiles de Patagonie représentent une nouvelle classe de vertébrés!!!)

[here, on p.195]
And note that the last reference on the same page, to Mercerat's Paper "Anales de la Sociedad Científica Argentina t. XXXV, p.65 ..." is erroneous. It ought to be tome XXXVI (here, still from 1893), where Alcides [sic] Mercerat's paper is found on: pp.65–96 "(Continuará)", and on pp. 97–103 "(Conclusion)".

Maybe the part you're looking for is found there? Pr not (it's all in Spanish and as such beyond my linguistic skills) ... ?

Also see the footnote here (from 1895).

Or, maybe here, by the same "Alcides Mercerat" (but from 1897), where "Stephanornis princeps Merc." and "Stephanornithes" are mentioned (in text) on p.226 (here).

What it says? I haven't got a clue.

Hopefully of some use/help?

On a .ar website, "$455" should probably be understood as an amount in pesos argentinos (they use the same $ symbol); if so, $455 is about 3.75€, which might actually make these 12 pages reasonably affordable... This website doesn't appear to propose to deliver items outside Argentina, however.

There is nothing about birds in Mercerat's 1893 An. Soc. Cient. Arg. paper, so far as I can see.
The 1897 work appears to be the first (and only ?) subsequent use of Stephanornis as a valid name, after the 1893 original introduction. Hopefully there is more in the original than there, though. (The only info provided in 1897 was that Stephanornis princeps would have "looked much more massive" than the Stereornithes.)
