I have a sony rx-10 for long walks or birding islands but i'd like a more powerful set up for Bif & or just to have in car for better shots of warblers in bushes on headlands in autumn etc. Iv never owned a DSLR or mirrorless what are my best options? Canon 5d mark Iv with EF 100-400m lens ?

what are my best options?
To step back and think about this carefully. What if you get enamored with the output from that second camera? shouldn't you possibly think about something that now could become a new full time camera, should that happen? For that reason, think carefully about the weight of what you are getting yourself into. And not be limited to think about one brand.

It's wide open... and your budget will determine a lot. Deep pockets? Get a Sony A1 and the 200-600 lens or equiv rig in Nikon FF. On a budget half that? Maybe the 5d or look at something APS-C, or even micro 4/3. Also consider how important portability is. Big lenses are a PIA. Heavy to hold.

Sound advice other than the latest 800mm is not at all heavy at 5.2lbs. I can swing it around all day.
