Just completed a 7 day trip up river in The Gambia with Karanta Camara (President of the Gambia Bird Guides Association). Absolutely great trip - perfect organisation, flexible (always had a plan B), great eyes and ears and really good company. Can't recommend Karanta more highly (and I used a different guide for a few days on the coast, who was fine but just couldn't compare in any way).
Up river Gambian birding offers some unexpected treats when based at Morgan Kunda Lodge, including possibility of visiting Senegal for the Scissor-tailed Kite/Lesser Kestrel roost at Kousmar, which is only 90km drive on a good road. Within Gambia saw Savile's Bustard, Four-banded Sandgrouse, Speckle-fronted Weaver, Sudan Golden Sparrow, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, Black-crowned Crane, Adamawa Turtle Dove among others.
