Around Reykjavik in late July (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I will be visiting Reykjavik in late July for a tourist holiday. I have one spare day and was wondering whether anybody could reccomened any birding sites within easy reach of Reykjavik?

We would really like to see Red-necked Phalarope as well as Harlequin Duck and Barrow's Goldeneye though the latter two may be difficult to catch up with in th south-west?

Thanks for any help,

Jonathan F http://jonnysbirdingblog.blogspot.co.uk

Barrow's Goldeneye can usually be found all year round at the river Sog, north of the town of Selfoss, which is about one hour's drive east of Reykjavík. Numbers in summer are low but it has bred in recent years. Harlequins breed on this river too although the vast majorty of males will have already migrated to the sea (and can be hard to find in July and August), but females and young should still be present. Red-necked Phalaropes are easy to see in late July at the lake Bakkatjörn which is in the town of Seltjarnarnes, just 4 km or so west of Reykjavík city centre. Best thing to do is look at eBird.
