Two moths from the Brazilian Pantanal in August. I think the first one's a moth, around 25mm long (2 pictures). The 2nd one was around 45mm long.

Hi Paul

Your first is a ctenuchid. I should be able to id it to species for you early next week.

The second (#3) is a male Enyo lugubris lugubris (Sphingidae). I would be grateful if you would let me know exactly when and where it was seen for a colleague who is plotting the world distribution of all hawkmoths.

Best wishes

Martin

Hi Paul

Your other moth is a ctenuchine (lots are wasp mimics): Trichura aurifera Butler, 1876.

Best wishes

Martin

Thank you again!

I've just had a quick look for any other photos of exotic hawkmoths, and I found this one - photographed at Sachatamia Lodge, Mindo, Ecuador, 8th August 2009.

Hi Paul

Sorry to disappoint but this isn't a hawkmoth. It's an ennomine geometrid (a distant cousin of our Willow Beauty, etc.).

It is Pero saturata (Walker, 1868).

Best wishes

Martin
