Vietnam: Possible Vivid Niltava and unidentified Thrush (bad image) (1 Viewer)

Hi all

Migration time. Yay! I initially thought the first image was a Hill blue flycatcher, but the orange extended down the belly too far, and the blue / black back bugged me. Some bookwork has lead me to believe it is a Vivid Niltava (orange wedge extending up from neck to beak). can someone please confirm (or deny if you have to: LOL)

Good luck with the second. The photo is terrible. From the way it acted, its location (this area is always full of thrushes during the migration) and it's shape, I presume it is a thrush.

The third I presume is yet another Asian Brown Flycatcher, but I have never seen one of these with its tail up like this.

Thanks in advance!

Wayne

Agree with 1 & 3, could second be sibe blue robin? long bubblegum pink legs & speckled chest? tail looks a bit blueish as well...

The first is a Cyornis Flycatcher, looks like a Hill Blue but with reservation, don't suppose you have a shot of the throat/chin?
The second is a 1cy/female Siberian Blue Robin
The third is as stated, a Taiga Flycatcher. Classic tail position, note the black and white pattern.

This time I have heaps of shots of the bird in question, although shot from a distance. Will troll through tonight and post what I can.

Was going to ask features to ID a Taiga Flycaycher, as is not even in Robson. Tx for this in advance.

Hi Wayne, Taiga should be in the new versions of Robson. If you have an older version, it is probably still as Red-breasted (or Red-throated). Taiga has been split from Red-breasted (which is the one we get here in Europe) since a while.

As for the pic Nr.1, I also agree to Hill Blue, compare:

regarding Taiga fly the key features are as follows (off the top of my head)

black central tail feathers which extend onto the uppertail coverts (almost the rump)
grey crown with little contrast to uppers (not brownish 'cap' on RBF)
overall 'cold' appearance
totally dark bill (lower mandible paler on RBF)
smaller bib in adult males
neater tertial edging on 1st winter birds, particularly on GC

Im sure there are other criteria but I'm afraid I dont have relevent notes to hand..

oh yes chances are if your east of the Urals its Taiga & if your West of Urals its RBF, unless you are very very lucky...

Hi guys

Looking at the images Florian listed above, it does look very much like a Hill Blue Flycatcher, but in the name of being thorough I have attached the images I had of the neck / throat region here.

Cheers,

Wayne
