Pseudasthenes, a new genus of ovenbird (Aves: Passeriformes: Furnariidae)
Zootaxa (in press)

Abstract: Phylogenetic analysis of the family Furnariidae (Aves: Passeriformes) indicates that the genus Asthenes is polyphyletic, consisting of two groups that are not sister taxa. Pseudasthenes, a new genus of ovenbird, is described for one of these groups. The four species included in the new genus, formerly placed in Asthenes, are P. humicola, P. patagonica, P. steinbachi, and P. cactorum.

...but perhaps we should be rather suspicious of a paper formally published on April 1st proposing a name with the prefix Pseud-.

Richard ;)

Robb Brumfield has submitted a proposal (#433, Apr 2010) to AOU-SACC to recognise Pseudasthenes:
http://www.museum.lsu.edu/~Remsen/SACCprop433.html

  • P humicola - Dusky-tailed Canastero
  • P patagonica - Patagonian Canastero
  • P steinbachi - Steinbach's Canastero
  • P cactorum - Cactus Canastero
And a further proposal (#434) to place all members of Schizoeaca and Oreophylax in Asthenes:

:t: Fresh wind in the taxonomic sails of SACC.
