Norfolk birding (13 Viewers)

Birds between Wells and Burnham Overy today included 1 Siberian Stonechat, 5 Pallas's Warblers, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, 1 Wood Warbler, 2 (probably more) Siberian Chiffchaffs, I Red-breasted Flycatcher, 4 Great Grey Shrikes, 75 Redpolls (mostly Mealies), 6 Crossbills (probably Continental types), Firecrest, eastern-type Lesser Whitethroat, several Ring Ouzels & Woodcocks, and many Bramblings, Blackcaps and various thrushes. With new birds such as Red-flanked Bluetail, Dusky Warbler and Barred Warbler turning up along elsewhere along the north coast today, it makes you wonder what Wells Woods might actually be hosting if more birders went there, like they used to...

No sign of the reported Barred Warbler at Hunstanton when I looked. Bluethroat distantly at HBO and also 2 Great Great Shrikes and 2 Black Redstarts along the Thornham Bank and a Wheatear sp. (see my blog for details on this)

We were 'doing' between Holkham and Wells on Monday and only heard of 2 Pallas's Warblers being seen...and it took us all day to see one of the blighters...!

Also 'heard' that Steve Gantlet was photographing 2 Parrot Crossbills at the west end of Holkham...[don't know if there's any truth in that tho]...:cat:

Whatever....we had a good day and the views of a single Pallas's Warbler at close range was superb...such great little birds...B :)

Congrats Jim on finding the RFB,saw it today,my 1st and wow what a little stunner, thanku for putting the news out, superb!!!!!

Glad to hear it Dave, I remember my first with much affection.
Increased observer coverage led to a Yellow-browed Warbler being found at the site along with Pied Fly. Although, no sign today.

Ricky- our previous weekend pales in comparison now, sorry mate! Caistergolf course was alive with Mipits though........;).

Wells Woods has gone a bit quieter (but don't let that fool you...). A Tree Pipit was there, pretending to be an OBP, and the Siberian Stonechat was still showing of course. Although yesterday I lucked into three of the five Pallas's Warblers present, I didn't hear of one being seen today, but a Wood Warbler and yakutensis-type Willow Warbler were both still present, plus at least one (non-calling) tristis-type Chiffchaff and a few Ring Ouzels. Still an eastern Lesser Whitethroat and GGShrike further west, I'm told. It appears that East End crossbills (for the third day running) are present early mornings only. The rescued Shag is still resident on Abraham's Bosom.

Definitely fewer of the commoner migrants between Waxham and Horsey other than a surprising increase in Blackcap numbers. Highlights included Jack Snipe, Great Grey Shrike and a real surprise in the shape of a juvenile Purple Heron. It flew north across the grazing marsh before landing out of sight and just as we got to the pillbox it flew low and appeared to land behind the sallows. No sign when we checked from Horsey Corner track but 40 minutes later it appeared again and flew north over the car park track and landed briefly before being lost to view.

Hi Keiran
I saw this bird today and it was a spec in the distance, even through a scope, so I can see why there are no pictures yet!!! You would need an 800mm lens or excellent digiscoping kit!

Cheers Penelope;)

Hey Pen,

The bird was very close when I visited today and there were plenty of long lenses there, including SG; so I guess something will be on BirdingWorld soon.

Cheers,

K

Blakeney Point today:
Highlight was finding a Woodlark at the Watchhouse.. My first at the Point

100's of Redwings with a few other Thrushes mixed in
3 Woodcock, Merlin hunting, lots of Goldcrest, a few Bramblings etc etc

Then Wells - Siberian Stonechat (Norfolk tick), 2 Mealy Redpolls, Shag.

Cheers Kieran , can't thank Valkyrie enough!
Back to more standard goings on, few Pied Wag over the house this evening so the usual roosts must be building again. Redwing also moving through which is a lovely sound punctuating the evening air.
Jim.

My Pallas's Warbler was still at East Hills today! Two Yellow-browed Warblers at Garden Drove, Siberian Stonechat at Wells and 2 Arctic Skuas and 1 Pomarine Skua at Coastguards, Cley this evening were the main highlights.

Full update and pictures on blog.

Does anyone know who put the other news out from East Hills today? I was first out there this morning and was the only one there as far as I know and started walking back at 1.15pm in time before high tide at 4.20pm. I am amazed if someone went out there after me:eek!:

Hi Penny

A friend and I went out there in the afternoon and got wet walking back. Intended to do a quick once around and back off, but was so full of migrants got a bit carried away and ended up having to wade back, and cross the saltmarsh at dusk (Not recommended!).

Unfortunately didnt see the Pallas's Warbler but the 12 crossbills were nice, continental chunky-billed birds but I dont think big enough for Parrots.

Otherwise 1 Mealy redpoll, lots of chiffs, blackcaps, thrushes and robins, a couple of bramblings and woodcock and A great white egret on the walk back.

Earlier Stiffkey woods produced 2 redstart, 1 black redstart, 1 pied fly, 1 tripit, 2 woodcock plus more chiffs, blacas goldcs etc.

A nice days birding, good to be back in Norfolk after a month away.

Then Wells - Siberian Stonechat (Norfolk tick), 2 Mealy Redpolls, Shag.

I heard it was this kind of activity that got Holkham nudist beach closed down, shame on you ;-)

Ahhhh.... it was you! Glad you saw some nice birds. It's hard to tear yourself away from there sometimes isn't it! I walked back in semi dusk the other day, also not recommended!!!

Hi Can someone please tell me what the weather is/was like on the North Norfolk coast today? Is it related to the lack of reports or are most of the birds moved on.
