A quiet but pleasant 3 hours on site yesterday 1200-1500. Nice n sunny but always the wind in the North. A pair of Avocets now appear to be nesting on the Moors. No sign of Med Gulls but still a pair of Ringed Plover on the Flashes. Highlights a Red Kite, Spitfire and P51 Mustang..... Good...

A total of 3 hours on site yesterday 1 around the Moors area and 2, 1300-1500, on the Flashes..... Quiet is putting it mildly but when you don't see a single Hirundine or Swift in 3 hours in the middle of May it really does make you wonder what is going on? Knowing my luck someone will find a...

For those that knew him..... ‘Whispering Chris’ shuffles off to the big twitch at Stourbridge Crematorium at 11:40 on Tuesday next. I am informed by Paul Legge that there is a wake at a local Church. I think we, that is Paul, Andy ‘Agro’ and myself, will be toasting him and raking over memory...

I hadn’t seen Whispering Chris for a while as i gather he had been infirm and housebound for some time and the situation over the last 18 months cannot have helped.....for those that followed the advice of the unelected experts ;-) I shall miss our little ‘chats’ at Whittington and Hagley Fields...

1200-1430 on site yesterday following my initial ‘Grandad’ visit to Stoke Heath. The first thing that struck me from the Moors car park was the deafening.....silence! Nary a sound was heard which was ominous to say the least. Walking the causeway i passed 2 separate individuals sporting only...

Well said Phil. I am critical.....of everything.....but i do try and make it constructive otherwise there is little point imo. I have actually been banned from Twitter - no surprises there as collective eyebrows narrow! It’s gr8 for news and alerts as is WhatsApp but i hope the pre-Covid...

Agreed Gert but we are where we are and people can feel that in this World of unresponsive Wildlife Trusts and controlling algorithms that what they do with their money is still something that is ‘theirs’ ;-) Yes - thanks Phil, interesting stuff. I look forward to bird notes and records...

With regard to the grand ‘opening’ of the reserve and carrying of cards / permits etc. Another option is to become a member of another Trust and give them your money and still have access through the wildlife trusts reciprocal arrangement. A lot of disgruntled birders actually live in the West...

Adrian - nobody has to wear a mask if it causes you discomfort or distress. I presume owners of a business could try and enforce something by insisting that people wear one but that would be difficult and prejudicial thus fraught with nuance. My comments on your enquiry were not about hide...

Adrian - that is my thoughts and opinion. What is the point in having somebody elses - yours for example ;-) In the unlikely event i bump into you i might actually surprise you with how helpful and congenial i actually am. People will continue to wear masks and glare at others because the...

Masks have never been a legal requirement anywhere as everybody is exempt if it causes discomfort and distress - don’t be intimidated and don’t be a Sheep. If you are a birder worried about people not wearing masks when they don’t need or have to then i cheerfully suggest you stop in and bird...

Sh1tfest is a tad harsh Phil - There is constructive criticism and people have not only had more than enough of this PlannedPanic but find it increasingly hard to justify the Trust’s stance on common sense access. The tracks are wide and who has not been double vaxxed? Those that are fortunate...

Unfortunately the Trust have shown themselves to be totally out of sync with the real world and continue to alienate members. Indeed some of which happily support them but in reality only visit UW. I don’t quite know what they have actually been doing for the last 15 months? I emailed an enquiry...

I didn’t realise there were so many property managers on here - how little i know;) As for ‘increased spot checks by the HSE’ - they never respond to an industrial accident until there has been one:-O These stressful times we, some of us, live in have empowered all the former school bullies to...

With all due respect Julie i have been using UW for over 40 years and have never had a problem negotiating the paths. They are like any other path or track - if you are walking towards one another there are plenty of pull-ins to get out of the way. There seems to be plenty of non-birders using...

Middleton is open - what is the difference? #askingforafriend;) Laurie - P.S. i emailed an enquiry about an historical aspect of another Trust reserve..........in April - pray what are they actually doing during ‘lockdown’?

It is just banter Mike nothing more nothing less and nothing personal. My definition of semantics probably differs from others but hey ho - at the end of the day i like to think everybody on here is on the same side. There is nothing to stop anybody accessing UW at several points from the Moors...

I class it as constructive criticism - not moaning or bitching. Everybody has their own opinion on how this has been handled but it is fairly obvious to me that we are playing catch-up. Perhaps Bozza’s ‘brush with death’ is clouding his own judgement? I am no expert and have not studied...

Sorry if i caused you to prickle Phil - i was not implying that it was a jolly. I am merely stating that maybe the time has come to allow members to bird from the pathways. There are a number of vantage points for general birding iirc that would cause no disturbance to birds scheduled or...

It seems that good old common sense and the fact that, hides apart, people do not generally approach less than a ‘yard and 3 inches’, is being relegated to a thing of the past by the Nanny State. People can riot and chuck public property in the river but law-abiders cannot go for a B (: or...

To be fair i thought it was only a feather as i couldn’t initially see the othe wing and i don’t know much about raptor moult sequence only that they moult individual flight feathers so they can continue to hunt. It was only when it banked slightly that i saw what looks like flak damage. I saw a...

The female Marsh Harrier is presumably the same bird as i had 2 days ago at Fens Pools. If so it is missing a bit more than a feather and is probably the result of target practice somewhere in the Mediterranean:C Good Birding:t: Laurie -
