Roland This shrub must be within the Rosaceae surely: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosaceae ..but it is a huge group and includes all the Apples, Hawthorns and Cotoneasters. I don't recognise it from my European experience (native and introductions) cheers, alan

    Sichuan Birding

Temminck's Tragopan Hi all, I wonder what the 2016 update is for this species - I'm told most sightings were on the bends below Balang Shan with some sightings at Longcanggou. Are there any tame ones (still) at Labahe? Is there any access? Having missed it a few years ago (flight views of...

    Sichuan Birding

Well not quite a Takin or a Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, but a rather fabulous thing! I've never heard of a Zokor until today. Thanks Sid. cheers, alan

    Sichuan Birding

Sid Some sort of mole rat type thing? I'd need to check the books. cheers, alan

    Sichuan Birding

Tawny Fish-owl Pete Morris has posted a great picture of a Tawny Fish-owl at Tiang Jia He on Surfbirds, from the ongoing Birdquest trip to Sichuan, a bird we missed on our trip a few years ago. It's great to know they are still around but also a reminder of what a stunning reserve this is. If...

    Sichuan Birding

Agree - I always enjoy reading of the trips and seeing the photos, as well as serving as a reminder that I need to get back to China to see more of the country and the birds. :t: cheers, alan

I agree with James that Google Earth is the key to finding good habitat - if you have good habitat at the right elevation then any birds within range should be there. We used this succesfully to determine the best strategy for seeing a rare quail-dove in Mexico. Good luck on the trip and the...

Sid, Say hi to Andy and his wife! Good news on the Robin and good luck at Tangjiahe - you always seem to have luck with that Fish Owl! cheers, alan

    Sichuan Birding

Sid, we saw Zappey's at Tangjiahe last spring - on the loop walk not far from the hotel, also singing Ultramarines in the tree tops. Pete Morris may have a pic of the Zappey's but I can't remember. We had seen them previously at Xianglomen, west of Beijing (in 2010 I think). cheers, alan

    Sichuan Birding

Many thanks to Roland for taking three of us (AL, PAJM, BR) around the key sites of Shaanxi and Sichuan over three weeks. We then finished our trip with 2 days in North Yunnan where Biet's laughingthrush was the main prize. The trip was hugely enjoyable and we saw almost all the key birds...

    Sichuan Birding

Sid Great, thanks - fingers crossed! I also suspect that the Jiuzhagou hotel story to come to nothing (nothing useful!). I'm not sure the knowledgeable guides would be up for a dawn start for Rufous-headed Robin! good luck on the next trip, cheers, alan

    Sichuan Birding

Request for Info. Labahe Sid and Roland are both on tour at present, but does anyone esle have any update on the roads around Labahe? We think this has been pretty badly hit but do not have details. With Wawu closed, it will be pretty hard (eg for LAP) if Labahe is also off limits this year...

    Sichuan Birding

Sid I'm sure you're right with Rosy Pipit. There seem to very few reports of Baer's this winter - even the one in Japan has been identified as a hybrid by some. cheers, alan

Sid, I've sent a PM about Sichuan, cheers, alan

    Sichuan Birding

Great, thanks for that. Although Wawu sounds great (or was!), it sounds as if most of the species can be picked up elsewhere. It will be interesting to see how James, Hannu Jannes et al. do on their tours this year at alternative sites. I think we will still plan a Sichuan trip in May next...

    Sichuan Birding

A brief bit of research suggests that these are probably the most important birds for me at Wawu (aside from the Tragopan). Any useful hints at where I could see these in Sichuan would be helpful: Grey-hooded Parrotbill, Emei Shan Liocichla Sichuan Treecreeper Great, 3-toed, Brown...

    Sichuan Birding

Thanks for the update - anymore information on alternative sites would be helpful; it is certainly the key site for viewable Temminck's Tragopans and that is a key reason for my visit. I think they are much more diffiuclt at Emei Shan now. Thanks again, alan

    Sichuan Birding

Thanks, I think this is what people are talking about. Anyone know anymore? cheers, alan

    Sichuan Birding

Wawu Shan - closed? I was hoping to go to Sichuan next year and was going to spend a few days at Wawu Shan. I've heard worrying rumours that it could be closed this year or next, for 12 months, so hotels, roads etc can be built. If it ends up like Juizhaigou it sounds like a nightmare...
