Certainly looks like a bug nymph. Fraid I don't know enough to know if it's a shieldbug or something else.

    Shieldbugs.

Had my first juniper shieldbug a couple of weeks ago on what I believe is western red cedar.

    Where were you?

    Shieldbugs.

Thanks, Aeshna, Here's another photo. I don't like it as much but perhaps it shows the parent bug better.

    Shieldbugs.

I found this really small shieldbug on a silver birch in our garden. It seems to be sitting on eggs. Sorry the photo is a bit dark - it was evening. I assume it's a common species.

    Shieldbugs.

not a very good photo but I found this one on our front door when I got home this evening. I think it is 'forest bug'.

    Shieldbugs.

A bit of a red herring, I'm afraid, but I was in Virginia recently (staying at a conference centre at Airlie). There were warnings in the bedroom about not squashing 'stink bugs' (for obvious reasons). I rather liked the fact that the notice ended: with apologies on behalf of the 780 million...

Thanks, Dave, this one was on great mullein but there was also dark mullein in the same place. Ken

    Shieldbugs.

Any ID on this one, please. It was about the same size as forest but doesn't look the same sp. I had hoped to get a more 'natural' photo but the bug had different ideas and flew off. It's probably not relevant but I discovered it when I was collecting seeds from some Verbascum. Ken

    Shieldbugs.

Thanks, Harry. I've just bought "Insects of Britain and Western Europe" by Chinery which gives a good overview of the various groups but it says that there are several similar species (but perhaps not in the UK?). BTW, have you looked at the post on what happens to butterflies in bad weather -...

Well, I guess that goes to show that I'm not too quick at picking up shieldbug ID ;) But thanks for the ID. Ken

    Shieldbugs.

Would I be correct in guessing that this is the hawthorn shieldbug? I found it in the garden this a.m. when trying to photograph a very unobliging hoverfly. Ken

    Shieldbugs.

Hi, Harry, Thanks for the info. I don't know what plant it was visiting but I'm sure that some of those you mention must occur near me. Ken

    Shieldbugs.

Thanks, Harry. Does this species live on plants other than gorse? Ken
  24. Surreybirder

    Shieldbugs.

It was on my shirt! There's not much in my area in the way of gorse or broom. Although I suppose some neighbour may have broom. I don't know if a side view helps? (It's quite a colourful insect seen from this angle!) Ken

    Shieldbugs.

Id? I thought this must be a green shieldbug but having seen the posts above I'm not so sure.
