15 years back I heard a different story about Black Death - that it came from and remains endemic in marmots. Apparently when they are shot in Qinghai the hunter leaves the odd for 30-40 minutes so that the fleas which are the true vectors for the disease will leave in search of a new host. An...

That's a cracking list Sid! Graham Speight was was one of the very first western birders to cover Sichuan in the modern era. His report is a classic and a rare source of guidance when I visited around Chinese New Year in 1991. Cheers Mike

The book looks really interesting Sid - any idea if it might be reprinted or available online? Am I right that the Reeves' Pheasants at Dongzhai are coming to grain in front of the hide? Cheers Mike

Sid - the birds I can handle (just), but as for the comments on air quality . . . thou art a smug bar steward! Sounds like a great move. Cheers Mike

That's quite a list of breeding birds Sid! Any idea on the reason for the closure of Changqing? Cheers Mike

Many thanks for this Sid. Our consultants in HK are strong proponents of regular human patrols with noisemakers. Birds become habituated to mechanical devices so they can be an expensive way to not solve the problem. You're right that small birds pose little threat - the issue is larger birds...

Wow 50+ Baza sounds amazing! and some more very good-sounding airport birds! Do you have a pic of the nets at Chengdu airport? I'd like to put one in a presentation I'm to the environmental NGOs in Hong Kong to show them what we're not doing in HK. Cheers Mike

By all means do start a thread on Chengdu Airport! I will of course point out that you have the grossly unfair advantage of actually having some decent habitat! Cheers Mike

Glad to hear its business as usual Sid. Less glad to be gripped, again, on the Monal! At least this time I'm being gripped in Phuket (for work) and am racking up a nice little list of garden birds with Indian Roller topping the charts at present. Cheers Mike

Nice pic of the Grey-winged Blackbird Sid. And good luck with Saker- proofing your tripod. Insurance may be the best way to go there! There are two Baer's Pochard at Mai Po this winter Alan. Cheers Mike

Many thanks James I'm pretty sure that Emei Leaf Warbler is the only one of these that breeds in northern Guangdong . . . My only real chance is to catch one of them singing! Cheers Mike

James Your comments on Emei Leaf Warbler are interesting. I had a bird doing the double wing flick in Ng Tung Chai a few years ago. Have you ever seen other phylloscs doing this? It would be great if it was diagnostic (although I suspect the records committee would not necessarily be...

Stunning pic of Emei Leaf Warbler Augusto. A bearded monster chasing hunters in the forest - sounds like Sid is on the way into local folklore as as the Monster of Moxi - great stuff!
