    Falmouth Birding

For those of you that occasionally venture away from Falmouth and into the wilderness south of Helston, you may be interested that Brian Cave's A Lizard Bird Diary is now available from Amazon. While not all will agree with Brian's rather unorthodox style to releasing rarities news, and the book...

Not quite Falmouth, but nice find by Steve Votier on the Lizard today: Black-eared Wheatear. Cracking bird.

Have a chat with Matt Witt if you’re doing any of his modules or see him around Uni. He’s been doing quite a bit of acoustic monitoring of cetaceans and radar tracking in Falmouth Bay.

I think you probably mean the FaBTest site, but based on those grid refs, it's 5.8 km

A reliable birding friend of mine reported seeing a Cirl Bunting along the coast path between Swanpool and Maenporth last Friday. Not got any further details, but can track them down if anyone is interested.

Request for Black-necked Grebe sightings Hi folks, I was contacted recently by Richard Cook from Natural England, who is in charge of sorting out the proposed Special Protection Area (SPA): Falmouth Bay to St Austell Bay. One of the key species for which it will be designated is Black-necked...

Yes, Treecreeper, Barn Owl and Woodcock are the obvious ones, although I wondered if there's any flocks of Goldies nearby or a woodlark or two hiding in any of the local daffodil fields. Been to College several times looking for Treecreeper, but no joy. Planning to do College in the morning...

    Falmouth Birding

Hi folks, I should have really posted a bit more regularly on here, but for the last month, I've been attempting to give the Falmouth birding scene a bit of kudos by participating in the 'Foot it' challenge. I’ve clocked up 113 species so for, apparently making it the second-best patch in the...

Hi Sam, I hope my reply isn't too dated (I only just stumbled across it). Woodcock are quite regular - I had one at Tremough recently. The most reliable local spot I know is here. re: Lesser spot - I've heard a couple of reports around Tremough campus in recent years, including a breeding...

Good to see you again Dan! Nice haul of birds. Yes - feeding and calling for about 10 mins, but in true fashion b******ed off as soon as I got my camera out! A Firecrest in addition to the stuff Dan mentioned. Cheers, Ilya

Blimey - must have had a lot more spare time on my hands a few years ago!

    Falmouth Birding

It was along the path that runs along Swanvale (NW of of Swanpool). About 10-15m upstream from the Swanvale Nature Reserve sign and a very short distance from a spray can lodged in a tree apparently. I notice Birdguides have put it out as a unconfirmed possible sighting. Fair enough, given they...

Dusky Warbler I have been reliably informed (by Rafael Matias - a friend of mine, and very good birder) that he found a Dusky Warbler in Swanvale about an hour ago. I'm stuck at work and can't get down today

    Falmouth Birding

Still no sign of odd Cormorants at Swanpool, but the Yellow-browed Warbler was calling again in Swanvale this morning

    Falmouth Birding

I popped down to Swanpool this morning - a few Cormorants, but nothing out of the ordinary. My suspicion is, as the Cormorants regularly move between the sea & Swanpool, the bird in question was out at sea. Probably worth checking keeping an eye on Swanpool over the forthcoming days. A few...

Bittern and a couple of Marsh Tits at College Reservoir this morning According to a Portuguese friend of mine, Red-rumped Swallows have been incredibly late arriving back in Iberia this year (as have Alpine Swifts). Barn Swallows, on the other hand, have been back in good numbers for some time.

    Falmouth Birding

No sign of any Boneparte's Gulls on College Reservoir unfortunately, but American recompense in the form of a splendid drake Ring-necked Duck again.

    Falmouth Birding

A quick trip to Carnon Downs sewerage works this morning proved quite productive: 2 Yellow-browed Warblers (at least one of which was unringed, so presumably at least 3 there given Mark Grantham ringed two yesterday) 1 Water Pipit (feeding on filter bed with Meadow Pipits, but pretty mobile) 1...

    Falmouth Birding

The Bittern appears to be back at College Reservoir. It was sat out in the open this afternoon looking rather miffed at the layer of ice that separated it from its dinner.

    Falmouth Birding

Indeed. Rarer than Ring-necked Ducks down this way;-)

Not quite Falmouth, but... there was a nice redhead Smew in Carminowe Creek this afternoon about 4pm. Quite wary and flighty, but still showing very well.
