Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi rkj, There's a separate thread on the camera equipment now ... I tend to agree with you. Here's my attempt at creating the desired headgar rig for the camera: https://www.birdforum.net/threads/improved-video-cam-setup-for-ivory-billed-woodpecker.418848/page-2#post-4291305 Regards, Henning

Hi John, I figure you're going to enjoy this: https://xkcd.com/2573/ (Don't forget to check the bubble help for an aviation reference.) Regards, Henning

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi John, If you'd share a photograph of your the headgear you're using, I could come up with a 3D printable sighting aid to help with keeping the camera on the target bird. I'd also suggest not to abandon the paddle mount approach entirely - it has already worked once, and with a better...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi John, There's a 4K version of the RunCam Scope Cam too. [Edit:] In 4K mode, it only runs at 30 fps compared to 60 fps in 1080 mode[Edit End], but I think more detail will probably be more important than a greater frame rate. I'm not sure it will be possible to aim a camera with a tele lens...

Hi Pat, You're right, the source is the cyberthrush blog ... here is the missing link: IVORY-BILLS LiVE???! ...<img src="http://bit.ly/gpgbfx" width="275" height="115">: — USFWS Meeting… pros and cons — Regards, Henning

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi "John", Mike doesn't need respond to me. However, if you don't respond to criticism, that will not help your cause. In fact, it looks a lot like dodging, and Mike really has a great amount of practice with that. He's about as good at giving a straight answer as the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi Jacana, I believe there's a historical precedent: The discovery of the Okapi was only possible through long and arduous internet discussion in which brave discoverers never shied back from aiming scorn at their antagonists while skillfully dodging criticism as if it consisted of mere words...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi John, Well, the "peer-review" argument again. Mike's math, as shown above, is built on a gaping hole, and as that didn't lead to a rejection of his article, the peer review process was obviously flawed from a scientific point of view. That might be not entirely accidental ... I don't...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi "John", "MIT-trained mathematician" is in quotes because it's a quote from Mike's self-description. "John" is in quotes because I'm quoting the name you gave me without much trust that it's your real name. That's not sarcasm, that's just signalling "I'll play along even if I'm 99 % sure...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi "John" It's Mike's turn to answer. I'll patiently wait until our "MIT-trained mathematician" has read up on the basics of normal distributions. Regards, Henning

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi "John" If you think this is about "nuances", I take that as a sign you're not overly familiar with math! :-) Mike has firmly planted his feet into thin air over a deep, deep chasm. Everyone can verify that, no trust in my own fallible person is required. This is college level math ...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi "John", That's a trolling technique called "baiting". I don't bite. If Mike claims it's an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, it's up to Mike to prove it's an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker. I have pointed out the fallacy in Mike's argumentation in mathematical terms. I suspect he's at home right now...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi Mike, The core question you failed to answer is, have you ever made posts using other accounts than the "Fishcrow" account here on birdforum? That is nothing anyone could easily check. Of course, this also means that you could be dishonest in this matter without fear of getting caught...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi Mike, For a "trained mathematician", you're curiously vague. Where exactly is the quote that supports your assumption that flap rate is independent of basically all possible systematic parameters other than species? If you can't prove that, your claim is dead, so take your time and prepare...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi Mike, From your article https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/2330443X.2019.1637802 "Tobalske obtained the flap rate statistics of the Pileated Woodpecker (5.2 Hz mean and 0.4 Hz standard deviation) from well-sampled data that were obtained in Montana (Tobalske 1996);" Tobalske's...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi Mike, Since you've not answered it, you are still evading the issue. Let me be very clear: All of your claims regarding the flap rate are based on a complete failure to understand how statistics work, on a very elementary level. I don't really need to know your scientific credentials -...

Ivory-billed Woodpecker: takeoffs with deep and rapid flaps + wing noises

Hi Mike, If you're into addressing all of an sudden, you might want to address this issue which you've been evading for a couple of years right now: https://www.birdforum.net/threads/new-paper-on-the-ivory-billed-woodpecker.380314/page-4#post-3890857 Unless your inner scientist suddenly...
