We are aware of the monstrously wide English names column on the BOW pages. Not sure how that happened, but we're working on it.

Andy and all, Just to make it perfectly clear, there is nothing exclusively "American" about these names. The editors of the IOC-WBL (granted Americans) were not the creators of the adjectives we have chosen to use for these two species. Rather, those were introduced by BirdLife International...

There certainly is! Can't imagine how that happened. Thanks for catching it. Finding these errors is exactly the purpose for the release of "red" copies about a week before our final release.

The shearwater lump is in discussion. No action at all on the others at this time.

Sorry, not really. Generally, we do release a draft copy of the spreadsheet for the new version with changes highlighted in red font about a week before the release of the final version in spreadsheet format. That allows a bit of time for comments. But we fully expect that any version of the...

IOC WBL has taken a different route and simply followed the linear sequence derived from the phylogeny of Černý and Natale (2022) which amazingly works, even though we've retained the original genera that are in our current version of the list. But further generic revision would be desirable...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

It would appear that the WGAC committee was unaware of the Iha et al. (2021) paper when they took their action to tentatively place leucogrammicus in Ixos. At least I can't find it mentioned in their analysis and discussion. We certainly were unaware of it. The IOC WBL team will discuss your...

There's no question that the discussions by participants with specialized or deeper knowledge of a given subject are extremely helpful (vital in many instances) in pointing out errors and lapses or offering different perspectives and interpretations. It's also encouraging to hear the support...

English name changes (unless associated with a split/lump) are not routinely posted in the Diary. It's always a good idea to keep checking the Updates section for complete information.

Just as a follow up: We have agreement from all involved that when P. brachyura is merged with the species currently assigned to Heteromyias that the recombined genus must be Leucophantes. Thanks again for pointing out this oversight. It remains our plan to move brachyurus to an enlarged...

Not exactly, it was based on a WGAC decision (as was the BOW entry). As you know, both IOC and the Cornell team (including Clements and BOW) have committed themselves to following the WGAC classification in our commitment to ultimately create a unified global checklist. But both groups are doing...

It certainly should. Its exclusion was simply an oversight which will be corrected today for IOC 14.1. No doubt, the fact that this species was oddly not included in the analysis of dos Remedios et al. (2015) contributed to the error. ' Thanks for catching this and to all who weighed in.

Thanks, Paul. Although "Louisiades" is probably acceptable, we've used ""Louisiade" for the other five species. Corrected to ""Louisiade"

It did generate a response! All of the 13.2 speadsheets have long been completed and their inks posted. The transition to 13.2 isn't "officially" completed yet because the BOW pages have yet to be created and placed on the website. Other more urgent issues, not related to the IOC WBL, have...

"On the common name tangent, I note the much more simplified names for the Tawny Antpitta splits. Might we expect simplified names for the Olivaceous Flatbill, Tropical Pewee, and Buff-fronted Foliage-gleaner splits down the road?" Good question. Currently, there are no plans to modify the...
