    Canon SX60HS in Action

Okay, I'm curious...which recommendations? |=)| I'm assuming the adjustment of the exposure compensation, based on your pics.

Also I've noticed the SX60 likes the more even (less contrasty) light on overcast days. I've had my best photos on medium-overcast days. I suspect most small sensors prefer this sort of environment; it plays well to their limited dynamic range.

kawwauser, what would you say, 50m maybe? Not bad at all. :t:

An example I can give is I have used the SX60 to photograph a Harrier Hawk hovering out near 100m and a Black Vulture soaring at nearly 120m—with only optical zoom (to be clear, that's BiF, albeit not faster movers). Photos I actually was happy enough to put in my gallery after a little work...

A Western Osprey at over 140m (likely between 140 and 155m): https://www.birdforum.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/614792/ppuser/119570 I'm not entirely sure how I captured this clear a photo at this range, but I did double-check and no digital zoom was used and I used my semi-usual 33%...

Given that the SX60 is still noisy under a wide range of conditions if you dare take it above 400 ISO (which is why I lock mine from even trying), not sure if the extra megapixels is a good thing. Would be better to have better, larger photosites. Sometimes 12–16mp is a better sweet spot on...

More photos from my vacation: Great Blue Heron Western Osprey (on platform @ 40m) Western Osprey (on branch @ 20 m) On the two osprey photos I was using my external flash (Canon Speedlite 430EX II) without the flash extender/better beamer. The overcast conditions were so dark it was not...

Like I said, "wait and see." It seems inevitable someone with do an "SX60 vs SX70" comparison, and I am honestly curious. |:D|

I'd have to see reviews with a marked increase in IQ, otherwise, non-plussed. The new P1000 is interesting, but just huge and heavy.

Not my best work, but something nice from my last outing from behind a blind: Great Blue Heron. This photo was taken at about 40m in overcast conditions. I couldn't use the flash because the holes in the blind did not allow it. I have some great Western Osprey photos from the same trip I'll...

Have any of you experimented with using a flash? Not the built-in, but something like a Canon Speedlite? Or one of the Better Beamer flash range extenders?

For mechanical issues and even some mild electrical issues, you might try using DeoxIT. The old Nikon Coolpix 900/950/4500 suffered from button/switch/pivot issues with age and DeoxIT helps alot, and is safe on plastic. I swear by the stuff for fixing oddball contact issues on cameras and audio...

Canon's site doesn't list any firmware updates to the SX60. I had forgotten to check with the CHDK effort and it looks like they did finally dive into this camera, so maybe you'll find something there? It's still in Alpha though. Glad to see they are messing with it, it might add some...

Okay this wasn't the best example I could provide, and I'll try to find a better one at some point: Before After I'm not exactly "gallery happy" with this salvage/rescue but it does give some indication of how truly bad an SX60 photo can be and still get at least ID-quality results, if not...

Not exactly crown jewels or anything but... Double-Crested Cormorant Great Blue Heron I know some of you have requested to see some before-and-after when I "salvage" photos of questionable quality into decent ones and I may have one to show soon of a Dark-Eyed Junco taken in shaded canopy...

I would recommend Shutter Priority (Tv) mode instead. Set your ISO limit to 400 to avoid undue noise, go with burst mode shooting (I use high-res, low-compression and a decent camera card), and use shutter speeds between 1/400 and 1/1000 (as high as the lighting will allow). Spray-n-pray once...
