Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

I'd agree, binoculars definitely have the edge, in terms of stability, due to them having two points of contact. That said, I'm amazed how 'easy' I'm finding the view through my monocular, I've genuinely surprised myself, in terms of stability after a period of learning.

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

The Opticron DBA VHD+ monoculars retail in the region of £300. But, my reason for purchasing was to experience a type of optic I've not owned/used before, because I only have one eye in working order (just for the time being, hopefully!). I'm simply using my temporary disability as an...

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

So, the past 24 hours has been a tale of three monoculars... First to be delivered was the 8x42 Opticron DBA VHD+. Oodles of eye relief, Japanese build and top notch optics, immediately impressing in terms of perceived quality. On paper, I anticipated that this might be my monocular holy grail...

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

I will, for sure. And if you ever find yourself in the unfortunate position of having only one eye in full working order, I can assure you, the prospect of a decent quality monocular will be as mouthwatering a prospect as any £2,000+ alpha binocular with two eyes! 😉

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

Will, that's terrific info, thank you very much, you've just cost me an additional £300!!! I put the 8x42 Opticron on order earlier and will add the 10x42, based entirely on your observation (no pun intended) that the 10x is not much different, in terms of stability, to a 10x binocular. I have...

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

Gijs, thank you very much for taking the trouble to check that for me, I appreciate it! Sadly, I think that's going to be just slightly insufficient for me, because I wear glasses when viewing. I think I'm close to going ahead with the Opticron monocular referenced earlier in the thread...

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

That was my perception when I started this thread, from what I'd read online, but with zero knowledge of monoculars, thought it prudent to check with those with a far broader knowledge of optics than myself, before pressing the button. Opinions/suggestions have been really quite diverse. The...

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

Gijs, do you happen to know the eye relief measurement for this monocular? I have struggled, so far, to find the information online. Thank you.

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

@Binastro and Peter, thank you, some really interesting suggestions. I'm not familiar with any of the monoculars mentioned, so some reading and research is required. A Hummingbird handheld is an interesting idea, although being angled (I don't think I've seen a straight version...?) it is maybe...

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

Many thanks for all the further replies and well wishes. I really wasn't in search of any sympathy, more explaining why I find myself 'potentially' in the market for a monocular. That said, I do confess to feeling a bit sorry for myself...😉😇😂 I also hadn't appreciated how difficult it would be...

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

Thank you very much for the suggestions and sharing your own eye issues and experiences. I'm just starting that journey, so find it all very interesting. Overall, I'm not feeling much love for monoculars, an adaptation of a binocular being recommended/preferred for the added stability. Maybe...

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

Hello all, In the space of the past 5 days I have suffered a tear in the retina of my left eye, laser surgery to close the tear, then a second tear adjacent to the original tear and some retinal detachment. Yesterday I underwent (rather unpleasant) surgery to fix the tear and reattach the...
