Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Thanks BW. I guess that I'll just have to get there before the mob.

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Thanks all. We come from the Barbate direction ( I've done it many times before) so go along to the Estrecho mirador to turn around and avoid the attentions of the police. Has the parking situation at Cazalla been affected at all and is access available at all times?

Can anyone provide an update on access to the Cazalla watchpoint this year?

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Plenty of movement yesterday (20th) notably of large numbers of Black Storks and Egyptian Vultures. The blustery conditions were holding them back so I have no doubt that there should be reports of significant numbers today. About a dozen Greater Flamingos on Barbate saltpans and similar...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

We arrived yesterday and are in the Vejer region as usual. As commented by Eddy there seems to be a remarkable number of bee-eaters around with at least 50 over the Casa this afternoon. Looking forward to taking a few more birds in when I get the chance.

Great and thanks again John. Time for me to reread your guide in preparation - just five weeks to go.

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Thanks John. I've now managed to find it via the Migres web site, despite my very rudimentary Spanish. Desperately trying to find somewhere that might be anywhere as good and accommodating as Cazella. I've always found Trafico to be good but it is a tricky drive with very little space for more...

Can someone please tell me the precise details of how to get to the Facinas observation point? I drove around this area looking last year but failed to pinpoint it. Are there any other sites that folk would recommend for autumn migration watching?

There was a new Migres centre being built on the way to Trafico last year. Has this been completed/opened and is it any good as an observation spot?

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

That's a real shame. Come late August and early September there have been a lot of people going to Cazalla - the loss of car parking will be a major blow (and possibly a hazard) if nothing else.

Just find out when I'm planning to go John - that's when it will rain! ;)

Centauro have no KM limit. they do, however, require you to check the fluids every 1000 km and top up if necessary, for which they will pay you on production of a receipt.

I always use Centauro who have no mileage limitation (except in Ibiza) and are generally a "no fuss" operation with decent prices. It is worth noting that the quoted prices decrease the closer to the hire date that you get so, if you hold your nerve, you get a very good price. This time around...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

There was plenty of heavy rain on La Janda today BW which kept most birds down, particularly the raptors, at least whilst we were there. One interesting find that we made was a Ring Ousel in the shrubbery at Montenmedio Golf Club, even though the Bald Ibises continue to evade us.

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Well Ii'm still here for another week I'm pleased to say. On a slightly mundane note there does appear to have been a reasonable wader movement with many hundreds now present in Barbate estuary. Nothing particularly spectacular but they were few and far between ten days ago, so things might now...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

In terms of general migration I see that there has been a massive influx into the UK today, predominantly on the East coast. Could this be an indication that the weather patterns have "unblocked" hence allowing the southbound migrants through. If so I guess that we could be looking to a shift...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Around the back roads of Vejer and on La Janda this morning there did seem to be signs of increasing bird numbers. Loads of Stonechats around as well as decent numbers of Whinchats and a few Northern Wheatear are always a good sign. At least three Montagu's Harrier were on La Janda and we had a...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Good sightings BW. We were there yesterday but missed the RNP's I actually couldn't believe how quiet it was compared with previous years as there have been literally thousands of gulls, terns, waders crowing the berms. I'll give it another try next week when the tides are more favourable and...

Indeed Stewart, from 10.15 until 12.15 in fact. It got really quiet by then and when I saw the Migres chap start to eat his lunch I decided that it was time to leave. Later on we had low down views of Booted Eagles, Buzzards and ST Eagles over our accommodation. I'm giving Sanlucar the...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Actually BW I was at Cazella, so there were. :eat: (Poor grammatical structure on my part I'm afraid.) All of the raptors were very high indeed though and difficult to spot with the naked eye. If the Migres guy hadn't been calling them out then I think most of us would have missed them. Good...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Yet yesterday (9th) there were 2000+ Honey Buzzards over Algorrobo and today whilst I was there for a couple of hours 100+ over Cazella as well as Black Storks (7), Egyptian Vulture (14) and the other usual BoPs. It is extremely quiet on the passerine front and the cause, according to many, is...

Thanks for the warning BW. Just checked mine (Centauro) and it confirms that all hires are unlimited mileage.
