    Butterflies of Armenia, June-July 2022

2 July. Mount Aragats & Ranchpar Fish Pools. Final day in Armenia. Classic birding on Mount Aragats - kicked off with a pair of Western Rock Nuthatches on a rocky gorge above Byurakan, then resumed the hunt for Radde's Accentor in the juniper zone a few kilometres up. No shortage of quality...

1 July. Arakelots Beech Forest & Janjur Pass. Peered out of the window at 7.00 am, half expected cloud and rain. But no, blue sky and a samamisicus Common Redstart singing its heart out. Wasted no time, departed and drove the hour or so to Arakelots, amazingly still sunny on arrival. On the...

    Butterflies of Armenia, June-July 2022

A bit delayed in finishing this report, apologies 30 June. Mount Gnishik, Noravank & Vardenyats Pass. Lada Niva came into its own, snaking its way up a rough rocky track to 2200 metres altitude. This is Caspian Snowcock territory, the high meadows above on all sides home to these elusive...

    Butterflies of Armenia, June-July 2022

I intend to visit again next year, am thinking early spring and perhaps summer again, but also the south. Temperatures were fairly moderate, 20-30 C, largely because I was at altitude most of the time. Was hotter in the lowlands west of Yerevan, but I was only briefly in this area.

    Butterflies of Armenia, June-July 2022

29 June. Mount Aragats & Yerevan Botanical Garden. Today's mission was high altitude, task to track down Bowden's White. Failed yet again on a quick check for Radde's Accentor in the juniper zone, thereafter arrived in the Alpine meadows beneath Lake Kiri at about 10.00 am, gloriously bathed in...

    Butterflies of Armenia, June-July 2022

28 June. Amberd Valley & Mount Aragats. Juniper zone on the southern flanks of Mount Aragats, dawn attempt on Radde's Accentor. In a shallow boulder-strewn valley, I began my wanders, Red-backed Shrikes dotting small bushes, Rock Buntings and Black-headed Buntings singing all over, one pair of...

27 June. Jajur Pass. Sunny at dawn, but not very promising skies. Had toyed with returning to Arakelots, but clouds over the hills dissuaded me of that idea, so instead headed ninety minutes west to the 1945 m altitude Jajur Pass. An area of fantastic habitat, high steppe grasslands stretch...

    Butterflies of Armenia, June-July 2022

Would be nice if only 50 vying for attention 🙂 At many locations, the puddling masses of butterflies numbered in the many hundreds, thousands over extended damp patches. Probably did overlook some species in these groups, but basically just slowly sifted through the groups picking out the...

    Butterflies of Armenia, June-July 2022

26 June. Arakelots Beech Forest. Heavy overnight rain, no real let up at daybreak - wet, windy and not very warm. Plan for this day had been to explore some areas of steppe on the eastern shore of Lake Sevan …but with the weather absolutely not conducive to finding butterflies, I decided...

Indeed, very often other butterflies got in the way when trying to photograph any particular individual 👍

A small indication of the abundance ... one tiny little fragment of a puddling group. Was like this in all damp areas. https://photos.app.goo.gl/d7pRcNWJu9t8K5T99
