How do you carry your binoculars?

I had to reluctantly get used to a harness. The Canon 10x42 IS is too heavy for a neckstrap. The one I settled on is the Zeiss harness. Works pretty well, better in any case than the Optech harness. Hermann

How do you carry your binoculars?

But they do work, especially if you use heavy binoculars. Interesting comparison. I trust you conducted some experiments to make sure both really do feel the same ... :sneaky: Hermann

How do you carry your binoculars?

That actually describes what I do nicely. Minus the dog. The importance of small scratches is overrated. And with good field technique you won't get a lot of dirt on the lenses anyway. To each his/her own. I see my binoculars (and my scope, for that matter) as tools. And I want to be able to...

How do you carry your binoculars?

But do you need full protection from the elements? Surely not, unless in exceptional circumstances. Most binoculars are waterproof nowadays, they're armoured and can stand the elements quite easily. Often better - much better - than the people using them. Modern binoculars don't need to be...

How do you carry your binoculars?

Bill Oddie (Bill Odddie's Little black Bird Book, London 1980) summed up my feelings how binoculars should be carried (or, indeed, not be carried) more than 40 years ago: "Even more significant is where you wear your binoculars. It's likely around your neck, I know that [...] but how long is...

How do you carry your binoculars?

You'll sure lose a lot of birds if you have to get the binoculars out of the bag every time you see a bird. Much too slow for birding, I think. At least for my style of birding. Hermann

How do you carry your binoculars?

The comparison to how people carry purses doesn't stick. No binocular, not even a 15x60, is as heavy as a typical women's purse ... For birding, I find carrying your binoculars bandolier style is just too slow. And if your binoculars bounce off your chest when you use a strap around...

How do you carry your binoculars?

Depends on the kind of climate you're in. In wet and rainy climates I find you really need a rainguard. And once you're used to it - and if you use a good rainguard! - you won't lose any time. Putting your binoculars to your eyes and taking the rainguard off becomes one fluid movement. BTW...

How do you carry your binoculars?

Moving binos to my eyes. You're right, we're talking about fractions of a second. But those fractions of a second can be really important at migration hotspots. I make sure my strap is set so the binoculars nestle fairly high up on my chest. Saves a few more fractions of a second ... :-) Hermann

How do you carry your binoculars?

Well, if you do some birding at migration hotspots it IS "a race". When there are passerines flitting around in bushes you need to be really quick to get a view. And having tried different methods of carrying my binoculars, I feel I'm faster when I carry them on my chest. High up on my chest...

How do you carry your binoculars?

Especially if you carry heavy binoculars, and your preferred binocular is on the heavy side. I find neck carry pretty comfortable - IF the binoculars don't weigh too much. My personal limit if 800 gr. Anything above 800 gr is too much for me, especially when I'm birding all day. Makes sense. I...

How do you carry your binoculars?

Round the neck is fast, a lot faster than bandolier. Provided you adjusted the length of the strap so it fits you. Hermann

How do you carry your binoculars?

I tried a few. Didn't work for me, I'm afraid. Maybe I'll give it another try sometime. I know, I lived in England for a couple of years ... :-) Did most of my birding in Suffolk and Norfolk at the time. A poncho is nice. I also prefer a poncho over rain jacket and rain trousers - unless it's...

How do you carry your binoculars?

Harnesses are a nuisance, and that's putting it mildly. If you live in a part of the world where the weather changes a lot you need to change your clothing all the time. Wind, rain, sunshine, sudden showers ... Plus I always carry a small backpack. So, say, I need to get into my raingear, that...
