What did you see in your binoculars today?

Two Buzzards cruising around. They are not rare here in SW Sheffield but aren't common either. And later I heard a Raven 'cronk' but didn't actually see the bird.

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Very nice bird, happy for you! I didn't bring my SF8x32 to Islay because I knew if I did, I would not pay sufficient attention to the SFL 10x40 I am reviewing, but boy, do I miss that SF..... Lee

What did you see in your binoculars today?

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Male Siskin in our garden and male and female Great Spotted Woodpeckers visiting our bird feed to eat the fat-blocks, much to the delight of the Blackbirds who flew down underneath the feeders to gather up all the fragments that flew off the fat-blocks as the Woodpeckers used their powerful...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

I know what you mean. The winters there are long and dark as they all are so far north but the island is gorgeous at that time of year with gold-red hillsides and clear blue-green seas. Today we had the wonderful experience of a flock of over 100 Brent Geese landing only 25 metres from us and...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Sitting outside yesterday evening on the northern coast of the tip of Ardnamurchan on the west coast of Scotland, 3 skeins of Barnacle Geese totalling around 150 heading south, presumably to Islay for the winter. Lee

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Maljunulo, Herons are among our favourites too. In Shetland Grey Herons are called Haigrie and we adopted this name for all the Grey Herons we see on the shore in the west of Scotland. We use it as a proper name not a species name so when we see one we say something like 'Here comes Haigrie, or...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

A reasonable suggestion John considering the information suggesting fish species are moving north too, but Sandwich Terns have for decades been breeding much further north than Islay on the Orkney Isles and they are still there now despite a significant reduction in UK populations as a whole...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

We are on the Scottish Isle of Islay and yesterday were astonished to see 3 Sandwich Terns fishing in our bay and catching what looked like sandeels. We used to see them regularly on the England east coast but have never before seen them in west Scotland. Last time we saw this species was about...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

That's a nice lot of species John. If the reed beds are big enough you might eventually get Bearded Reedlings. Lee

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Male and female Blackbirds both taking food to their first fledged brood of the year, hiding in various places in our Hawthorn hedge. Lee

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Our neighbourhood abounds with Blackbirds and we have a pair building a nest in our back garden. We have Song Thrushes locally too but they are dominated by the Blackbirds and so tend to be discrete and even secretive. Lucky for us that a pair of Song Thrushes has taken to using our pond to...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Seriously John, we have a Spoon-bill in our bedroom. It is a delightful pin-badge from Leica and belongs to Troubadoris. And yes we would love to see one (or more). Lee

What did you see in your binoculars today?

John are you sure they weren't singing Sueña con el bebé, on this day of all days? Lee

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Went for a walk around our neighbourhood and took in a diversion to a bridge over a brook to check out possible sites for photography to accompany an upcoming review and while I was leaning over the bridge gazing at the brook and its banks, a Kingfisher came rocketing under the bridge and flew...

Male Siskin visiting our pond for a bath. Lee

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Today we had our first Siskin of the winter. It was a male in tip-top condition and this little finch looked terrific through the MeoStar B1 10x32s that are living on my work station just now. Lee

What did you see in your binoculars today?

For years we used to have flocks of up to 10 Greenfinch visit our garden at this time of year but in the last 4-5 years we only saw 2-3 at a time if we saw any at all. Yesterday a flock of 9 landed in our big Hawthorn hedge and I got a good look at them with a MeoStar 10x32. I believe numbers of...
