    Clements Checklist 2010 updates

I'm surprised that with the recognition of Eurypygiformes and Otidiformes that Gruiformes wasn't resequenced to form a contiguous order. If I read it correctly Gruiformes stops at Sungrebe and restarts at Limpkin with the two new orders sandwiched in between.

    Nikon P5100

First pix with P5100 I got special permission to take my P5100 Xmas present with me to the Gambia at the end of November. I got some reasonable results though haven't experimented with all the settings yet. These were taken in Normal program using the 3s timer (with ATS65HD and x20...

    Caithness to Speyside

I was due in Inverness last Friday so I decided to make a trip of it and do some birding en route and in down in Speyside. Set off early on Thursday morning and went to Dalchork forest. Found a black grouse on the lek site. Only one male but got some cracking views. As I was heading back to...

    orkney birding

Hi Dafi, Good call. I for one have enjoyed your orkney thread. I've been over there a few times and always enjoyed my visits. Must come back some time soon, it's only a short ferry journey from Thurso. Cheers, Iain

    Southern Indian Endemics

Monday 19 March Spent the morning birding an area of the sanctuary known as Kallibara. Not many new trip birds but a crested goshawk performed its fluttering display flight. Next we went looking for white-rumped munia in a nearby marsh. No luck with the munia but we did find the second...

    Southern Indian Endemics

Saturday 17 March After a brief photo stop overlooking the Lockhart tea estate we set off for Thattekad. Roadside stops provided distant views of black eagle then at mid-day we stopped at Nadukanny and climbed a small hill looking for larks and pipits. At lower evaluation the heat and...

    Southern Indian Endemics

Hi Rob, Thanks and yeah, got myself a swaro ATS65HD. Smaller and lighter than the leica apo-televid so it's ideal for taking on foreign trips. I reckon it's also optically superior and I'm getting better digiscope results. The birds still have to be fairly static and I fire off as many shots...

    Southern Indian Endemics

Thursday 15 March We left Pariyar heading towards Munnar but took a diversion which took us just over the Bodimett pass and into Tamil Nadu. A few km over the pass we stopped to look for yellow-throated bulbul. We heard our target bird straight away but it didn’t show so we walked up the road...

    Southern Indian Endemics

Tuesday 13 March The first of two full days in Periyar. We would be accompanied by park guide Raj Kumar for morning and afternoon bird walks. Raj knows the territory well and it wasn’t long before we’d added three woodpeckers to the list with brown-capped woodpecker, black-rumped flameback...

    Southern Indian Endemics

Monday 12 March After a leisurely breakfast and what proved to be the only decent cuppa of the trip we set off for Periyar. Roadside birding provided us with excellent views of pintail snipe and black eagle. As we drove to higher elevation we found my first lifer with brown-backed...

    Southern Indian Endemics

Early in March I joined four other birders on an organised trip to Kerala. I’ve been birding in Sri Lanka and done a couple of trips to Northern India but never been to the South. So this was a chance for me to catch up with some southern endemics. It was a very enjoyable trip with good...

Filenames into Excel Hi Dieter, I have an excel workbook that will read folder contents. Just enter filespec (e.g. *.jpg), click a button which opens the 'Browse for folder dialogue' and any matching filenames, size and timestamp are copied into a separate worksheet. I've modified the cell...

    Caithness Birding

Over to Wick again this morning and the american wigeon is still on the river although as the tide was in and the ducks were much further upstream beyond the end of the footpath. Managed a few shots of the wigeon albeit through a fence. Good numbers of eurasian wigeon, a few common goldeneye...

MEXICO trip - Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and Sinaloa. Jan 2007.

Hi Colin, Excellent report and I'm glad that the last minute changes to your itinerary worked out so well. Having been to Mexico five times on vacation, once to west coast, it's about time I did some proper birding there. Just had a taster so far and there sure is a lot to see. Cheers, Iain

    Caithness Birding

Decided to stick closer to home today with a circuit east of Thurso. Got off to a good start as the drake american wigeon was easily located on the Wick river. A single barnacle goose was with greylags (~100) and pink-footed geese (~250) to the N of Loch Scarmclate. Down at Scrabster there...

    Caithness Birding

Well the weather didn't hold, Scrabster weather station recorded gusts to 90 mph today. Went out anyway but did most of the birding from the car. Count of 62 Whoopers at Broubster Leans was the highlight of the day and despite the awful conditions managed to see 54 species. Iain

    Caithness Birding

Today was supposed to be my first birding day of the new year but it didn't work out that like that. Central heating system blew last night and had to spend the day getting it sorted. Finally got out the door late aftenoon so decided just to have a quick look at Scrabster Hbr. Still a...

    T'isil Nature Reserve, Yucatan

Hi Tim, Yeah it's a great place. This'll be my fourth time in Yucatan. More beach hols with the Mrs than birding trips so I don't usually get to stray too far from Playacar. That's why I've managed cozumel and the gardens at Puerto Morelos but not got to the North coast. Also why I don't...

    T'isil Nature Reserve, Yucatan

Hi all, A recent article in Birding World (Aug 06) described the excellent birding to be had at T'isil NR near Cancun. Apparently this is a privately run reserve. As I'm heading off to Yucatan soon I was hoping someone might know if visitor access can be arranged or maybe has contact details...

    Caithness Birding

Thanks for all the +ve comments. Caithness records for Iceland and Glaucous peak in Jan/Feb but both are regularly reported in November so this is not unusual RB. There were three trawlers in Scrabster this afternoon and that seems to have brought more white wings in, at least four birds...
