Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

A few more! :D. All photos with Lumix TZ70 pocket camera: Tit-like Dacnis, while camping in Cajas NP, Ecuador Inca Jay hunting for moths in the early morning near San Isidro, Ecuador Sunbittern, Mindo, Ecuador Ecuadorian Hillstar near my tent, while camping at ~4100m elevation in...

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

After a Masked Flowerpiercer topic somewhere else on this forum, I couldn't resist posting this pocket camera shot (Lumix TZ70) I made in Ecuador. Lucky shot, because most of the time these small birds are too fast for pocket camera shots.

    Will the blue tit return?

Never touch anything until the breeding season is over. It isn't necessary either, because if another bird wants to build a nest there, they will build it right on top.

    Ptarmigan this Month

I would still recommend Cairn Gorm and Ben Macdui because they are easy to access, and Ptarmigan are hit and miss anyway. Take the highest parking lot and walk from there. I have seen Ring Ouzel on that parking lot in the past. On the sub-arctic plateau that is Cairn Gorm and Ben Macdui, I have...

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

Yes that makes sense because 1) they have larger objective lenses and are therefore not limited by diffraction like pocket cameras with super zoon are, and 2) their pixels are larger, so they already have more dynamic range/ less noise and therefore need less noise reduction (=loss of detail) to...

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

This was the day I decided I needed a superzoom on my next camera! Snowy Owl on my Kungsleden backpack in Sweden, with Canon Powershot S95 (10Mp, 3x zoom) Also: Arctic Fox! (on the same trek)

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

Btw, this was taken with a Pentax Optio S (3.2Mp - tiny, 115 grams camera). But arguably very close up :D Rufous-backed Dwarf Kingfisher, Sabah, Malaysia

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

3.2 MP is perhaps a bit low, but I prefer low pixel count in pocket cameras. They are less noisy, so images need less processing by the camera. The old pocket camera I'm using now is 12 Mp which is low by today's standard, but in terms of sensor I preferred my previous camera that had 10 Mp (but...

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

One of the biggest problems with pocket camera is that it often focuses on the background instead of the (small) bird on the foreground. Success rate is considerably higher when the background is empty. Blue-naped Parrot, Philippines

    Help with Great Tit Nestbox

Of course I don't know what happened. But one thing that I have noticed with my own Blue Tit box (with camera) over the years is that often in the beginning things can look great and then after 1-2 weeks chicks start dying, sometimes in large numbers. I suspect that it has to do with them...

What Bird can you hear just now?

From here behind my computer right now, I can hear a Blackbird and Collared Dove singing nearby and a Magpie calling. Also a Robin and a Great Tit singing in the distance (difficult to hear). Edit: and just after posting this, a couple of Herring Gulls flying over, with loud calls.

    Memorizing tips

Also, my experience is that when you have similar species but one is common and one is rare, when you know the common one well, the rare one often stands out much more than you would have expected, even in very similar looking species. I have experienced quite a few times when I was looking for...

    Memorizing tips

I always do a bit of homework before a trip. It helps a lot to familiarise yourself with the species you are likely to see. I may not remember all the exact names at that point, but I do know what bird it is. If a number of species are very similar, rather than trying to memorize all the exact...

Shots of birds, taken with your pocket camera

You can get reasonably good pictures with a pocket camera with superzoom, as long as there is enough light and the object isn't moving too much. Pictures below with Lumix TZ70.

Great Tits brought in sticks and never been back

Yes this is normal. I have seen similar behaviour in the past (with Blue Tits). She brought in a bit of material but never came back. Probably found a better option somewhere else. But I have also seen that material is brought in and then nothing. Then a couple of weeks later it restarted, she...

    Nitrogen fill, how long

It's an interesting question. I had never really thought about that. Btw: the problem isn't nitrogen moving out but water vapour moving in. The reason binoculars are filled with nitrogen is not because you need nitrogen but because it is a way to ensure during production that no water vapour...

    Bluetit nest box predation

This is confusing. They only lay 1 egg per day, so if you suddenly see 6 eggs then that suggests that the eggs had simply been out of view. Or were the eggs laid over a 6 day period? Regarding possible predation, how big is the nest box opening? If you make it 25mm, only blue tits can enter it.

    Blue tits nesting.

It is very common that the nest is build in stages, with sometimes days of no activity, so don't lose hope. But it also happens that the nest building just stops. Impossible to tell at this stage. Just keep monitoring :) My money is on them returning though.

    blue tits

As long as the clutch is not complete, the bird will not spend a long time incubating. This to ensure that the eggs won't hatch too far apart. Once the clutch is complete, she will spend most of the time incubating, but still leaves the nest every now and then to feed, even when the male brings...

    The 10% Club - Milestones

As for milestones, for years I've had the number 3000 in my head (without guides). I'm at 2518 currently so I'll almost certainly get there a few year from now. After that, I'll perhaps focus on specific families, e.g. see all hummingbirds (of which I'm currently at 101/366)

    The 10% Club - Milestones

It's quite depressing to think that especially some of the younger folks among us will, if they look back at their lives several decades from now, will have seen quite a few extinct species.

    Nest boxes and cats :(

Don't touch anything until after the breeding season. It is possible that they only temporarily paused building the nest and that it will resume later. I have seen that happening many times!
