Booking Rio Blanco lodging and guide

I didn't think it was the water company operating the reserve any more. That email address doesn't seem to be on the contact page: https://reservarioblanco.co/

    Masked Flowerpiercer!

They are a lovely bird. Having birded in both Cheshire and Colombia I can tell you with certainty which of those two you will hear a Masked Flowerpiercer in, and it ain't Cheshire!

    Wingspan Brought Me Here

Excellent intro, welcome! Most people I know are birders who got Wingspan , interesting to hear from someone getting Wingspan and becoming a birder :)

Scottish Crossbill - Yes? No? Never?

An interesting thread, as a result I've just deleted Scottish CB off my life list :( Was in Abernethy volunteering with RSPB early 90s and wardens called Scottish but from memory it was on chunkier than normal bill rather than call (birds in a tree , not in hand so in hindsight was perhaps...

    Mystery Thornbill, NSW, Australia

Brown for sure. The shots with the face rule out striated even at low res, plus they are more olive-brown than grey-brown.

Colombia - Minca and Tayrona: what to do?

I don't think being on a 'big name co.' tour is like that, and hiring your own local guide is definitely not like that. Not in my experience anyway!

Colombia - Minca and Tayrona: what to do?

If you want a bit more chill, and English speaking, try Sebastian Ballesteros - he is based in Minca. Have used him on both our Colombia trips. Colombia Bird Photography Tours | Photonatura Colombia | Magdalena

Colombia - Minca and Tayrona: what to do?

Ok, agree that would be fine to the lodge. I'm fairly robust but not sure I'd be excited about taking one up to the ridge, though I'm sure they'd have a go!

Colombia - Minca and Tayrona: what to do?

....and yes you probability of seeing certain targets certainly reduced (to nil for some probably!) if you don't go up to the ridge. You will still see cool birds though :)

Colombia - Minca and Tayrona: what to do?

When we were there someone was running up to the ridge! (Not a birder!) 600m at that elevation is tough going but fine if you are fit. No shop at ProAves but plenty of shops in Minca, just need to plan before you go up. We came back down for lunch, but I'm sure if you asked in advance ProAves...

Colombia - Minca and Tayrona: what to do?

Maybe moto taxi means something else, but if you mean those wee tuc-tuc (or even a regular car) those things will not in my experience get you beyond El Dorado. We were there October '23 with a driver with a Toyota Landcruiser. There was a serious landslide over the road and we had to jump out...

    Victoria Australia - cheeky challenge

You can just about make out the white alula of a White-browed Scrubwren, but the colours of what else we can see and the description of the behavior check out too.

Best birding trips in Central/South America?

I think in a week you can cover a smallish area well (say Minca / Santa Marta) or a larger area (say coast /Santa Marta / Perija) a bit more frantically. We did the latter in October last year: Arrive evening Barranquilla Day 1 Palermo-coastal stops Stay Minca Day 2 Minca Stay El Dorado next 2...

    The 10% Club - Milestones

Coming up on 20% (2057) Would like to hit 1/3rd by 60 (gives me 9 years) 50% species lifetime (hoping to live past 60!) See something in most families (all sounds too hard/expensive!) Perth, Australia, bird song ID request

No need to surrender @Tom Tarrant , it wasn't a war! Always happy to have my ID calls tested, and still possible a Western Australian will pop up and correct us both :) I've not seen / heard WYRobin or WRosella first hand for years.

Perth, Australia, bird song ID request

Pretty much bang on for nominate subspecies of Western Yellow Robin. Morcombe app (if you have it) has it listed as 'piping whistle' call variant. Couple of recordings in ebird also a good match.
