Montrose basin (uk) wader. Mystery wader

Thanks, that’s the response I was looking for. My memory was very much a ruff, but I just threw it out there because I’m no expert.

Montrose basin (uk) wader. Mystery wader

Ha ha. That would be well dodgy, but just an out-of-interest question is a lot more fun. But if you want to take that approach it’s already inked in, dated and the photo I took of a genuine STS in Hong Kong is already on the way to the rarities committee. I’m sure you’re happy now. 😁😁

Montrose basin (uk) wader. Mystery wader

I took this rubbish photo of a wader on Friday assuming it was a ruff. Given the presence of a sharp-tail today is anyone going to answer my prayers?

    Grouse species - Glenshee Uk

The next day I went back and saw 6-7 ptarmigan just below the summit of the cairnwell through a telescope from the car park. Made me realise the ones I posted earlier were definitely red grouse

    Grouse species - Glenshee Uk

When the birds flew, there was no white on the upper wing. Just the underwing

    Grouse species - Glenshee Uk

Just seeking confirmation that these are red grouse, even though they were on a boulder strewn ridge at 900m

    Flores, Indonesia

Needless to say Sam was excellent and without his help I wouldn’t have seen most of the above. If anyone wants further information, message me and I’ll do my best. Bali was disappointing as a holiday destination and a birding location but Flores was much better. Plenty of primary forest and...

    Flores, Indonesia

On Flores we stayed at the Plataran Hotel and saw many Lemon-bellied White-eyes in the trees around the grounds On our first full day on Flores we visited Komodo and Rinca and saw at least 11 Komodo Dragons including fully grown males and young. Tremendous experience

    Flores, Indonesia

Ok. So I’ve now got time to give a little more information. Remember that this was not a birding bird. It was a family holiday with some trips. We had spent the previous week on Bali, where the highlight was of course three Bali Myna that we saw at the very end of the road at West Bali NP. The...

    Flores, Indonesia

I’ve just come back from a family holiday to Flores and happened to hook up with an excellent quality guide. I’m posting his resumé here in case anyone else is interested. I only had one full day from Labuan Bajo and managed to pick up these lifers, on top of many other Asian species...

Birder's Lifelist - should heard birds be counted?

It’s a great, if old, thread. I’m old school coming from the golden age of the 80s/90s and I’m definitely in the must see camp, although subsequent heard onlys are acceptable for my year list. However 40 years on and I still haven’t seen a quail and despite many many hearings it remains off all...

    Birding Brazil 2024

Having looked into more throughly we have been unable to get accommodation for the Amazon and the pantanal with travel from the Uk for under £6000 each. Add on iqassu and we are up to £7000 each. Phenomenal prices.

    Guiding help for Flores, Indonesia

Does anyone know of any bird guide I could use for a day trip in Flores, based at Labuan Bajo? I am in touch with Maximilian Wago (who has been very helpful) but unfortunately he’s busy on another tour. He has offered me his driver for the day, who knows the spots, but not the birds, at a very...

    Jordan bird photography

At your peril. We went to Jordan last summer and I never felt comfortable wearing binoculars let alone a large lens. Binos were confiscated at the Dead Sea hotel we stayed at and on the return journey I was forced to put my binoculars into the hold. Nobody seemed to get it. Nobody was into...

    Harriers in Norfolk this morning.

My son saw these this morning at the pallid harrier site. D5C… and 78C… were the same bird. Marsh Harrier? EE2… and 755.. are both of the same different bird. Smaller and lighter than the first one. Photos in the dawn light so accept very difficult.

Dn many people keep a county year list?

I do an East Lothian county year list, but at the end of each year I realise I’ve not ticked lots of scarce birds because I’ve previously seen them in a different county. My British year list is more important to me and I really wish it wasn’t.

    Birding goals for 2023

We went to Monterey a few summers ago, had a great couple of hours birding the 17 mile drive. Our whale watching trip happened two days after a party of orcas moved through. Cleared out all the blues ☹️ Saw my first albatross however

    "The Big Year"

Any film with Jack Black has to be worth watching. 👍 Any film about birds has to be a good thing. 👍 Errors? Yes loads, but so what, just enjoy it.

    Birding goals for 2023

I was determined to put my year list on the back burner in 2022. Fuel prices being the primary reason. Managed to get to the middle of February before I realised I was fighting a losing battle.

    Birding goals for 2023

Finally see a quail and get it on my British List. My British List got no additions in 1986, the only year I’ve failed. Still hurts to this day. Five lifers added in 2022 so far.
