    Birds around Bromyard

My wife and I, occasional but not fanatical birders, are spending the first week of May in a cottage near Bromyard. Any help on the best birding spots in the area would be most welcome - bearing in mind that I am disabled (heart problems) and can't walk far, or uphill hardly at all! Still, I...

    Zeiss bins with built-in rangefinder

I found this on another forum: September 30, 2008 Carl Zeiss has incorporated a laser rangefinder into its new Victory RF binoculars, providing hunters, hikers and birdwatchers with an all-in-one viewing solution in a compact form factor. The Victory 8x45 T RF and Victory 10x45 T RF binoculars...

    Huge beetle from Fulufjället, Stockholm

Monochamus Agreed. Monochamus sartor. The white bands on the antenna suggest a female. Might be worth removing it as my old Collins field guide notes that it can damage structural timbers!

    Keeper binoculars

My wife has a pair of Leica 7x42 Trinovids - much newer than mine. But not a lot better in terms of sharpness and contrast. I also have a surprisingly good pair of Kowa 7x40s for the car. But the old Zeiss are superb in the dull, indifferent light we so often get in England. I also find them...

    Keeper binoculars

I bought my Zeiss 8x56 Dialyts in 1990 - and they were 14 years old then. I see no reason to change them. I am more interested in what I see through them than what I am using to view the bird.

Nikon SE eyecups--a lesson in pathetic Nikon customer support

Its not just Nikon - here's the excuse from Leica I ordered new eyecups for our 7x42s from Leica UK. When nothing happened for over two weeks, I send a sharp email. This is the reply: "Unfortunately at the present time we are unable to supply spare parts due to a having upgraded our computer...

    Kowa 7x40 bins

I picked up a pair of Kowa 7x40s in a shop in Buxton some years back - about £100 then. I wanted something for the glove box of the car. They have been wonderful for that - light, easy to focus and totally reliable. I've never heard them mentioned - anyone else tried them?

    Uninteresting facts about me

New member - ageing, retired, grumpy and ever thankful for the miracle that is the internet. Likes Macs, Nikons, and small birds. Spotted flycatchers, for instance. Or nice redheads of the two-legged variety. Lucky to live in an old cottage in a small village in the country. Health issues...
