    Head Design

I've been looking at the websites for some of the suggested manufacturers and I am surprised to see that none of them (so far) seem to have a head with the type of pan and tilt handle which locks the scope with a twist of the handle that my old PH-157Q has. I use one hand to point and lock the...

Sirui VA-5 vs Manfrotto MVH500AH (visual comparison)

Yarrelli, very interesting post. Can I ask please a couple of practical points when digiscoping. How you go about getting the photos in focus? It seems to me that there are two ways - focusing the scope by eye directly and letting the phone auto focus on this, or setting the phone to a fixed...

    Head Design

Hi. There's a good and useful primer for Tripods in this forum. Is there anything similar for heads either here or elsewhere please? I'm replacing a pretty old Velbon PH-157Q which I believe is pan and tilt, but I would like to understand what other options are available. Thanks.

    Effect of varnishing moth trap

I am intending to weatherproof my plywood moth trap with yacht varnish but just wanted to check whether this might be in anyway dangerous to the moths or affect the effectiveness of the trap. Any thoughts please?

Please excuse the off topic post, but since the monthly WeBS count for UW is posted here, I wondered if there would be anyone interested in taking up the counting role at Coombe Abbey over near Coventry which has become vacant...

    Coney Meadow and Adjoining Areas

My first visit to Coney meadows yesterday 3pm-5pm. INteresting site, nice variety of birdlife. Singing blackcaps, common whitethroat, chiffchaffs. Red legged partridge and swallows in field west of river. Goldcrests, nuthatch, possible reed warbler, green woodpecker, kestrel, buzzard and one...

    Flamborough head sites

Heading for Flamborough at the weekend all being well so I've been looking at recent sightings. There's been a Bean Goose which would be a nice tick for me if it's still there - whereabouts is North Marsh on the head please, I can't see it on a map?

Apparently you can add Brandon Marsh, 4 birds yesterday, to that list.

Took this at the weekend - presume it's a herring gull, but seems quite dark.

Rare visit to the site by me which unfortunately from my perspective coincided with the work party. Nevertheless, well done to all those helping out - that silt digging looked like very hard work. Of note then, raven over, cettis calling and brief view in bushes along path close to hide...

    Canon SX230

Recently purchased a Canon SX230 14x optical zoom compact. Generally very nice. However I had hoped, with its manual programming features, large bright screen and built in GPS, that I could use it for digiscoping, but the lens extends so far it is difficult to find a mounting position on...

    Viking Vistron replacement

I've been looking for a pair of 10x42 to replace an aging pair of Viking Vistron which need retiring. I've been musing over the Viking MD (£280) or Hawke Frontier OH (£200) amongst others as a small upgrade to the Vistrons, but I've spotted an ad for a pair of second hand Hawke Frontier ED (Mk...

    Raptor ID (Pyrenees)

The photos here and here were taken by a friend on a recent trip to the Pyrenees in N Spain. He described the bird as huge and that he later saw several of them in the same area. I'm tending to think Griffon Vulture after a look through Collins, possibly a juvenile as the bill appears quite dark...

    Hi from Coventry

:hi: Malcolm here! I live in Coventry in central UK and I am an enthusiastic, if often unsuccessful birder, having caught the birding bug off my even more enthusiastic and usually more successful daughter. I am fortunate in living within a couple of miles of Brandon Marsh where all sorts can...
