    ATX range 20x60 85mm or 30x70 95mm?

I've posted a similar message in the sea-watch forum, as that's my primary focus. I'm querying if there's a massive improvement in sea-watching with the higher magnification and larger object lens, or if the 85mm may have its own better claims, e.g. if it has a wider field of view, or is better...

    Which Swarovski Scope?

Within the ATX range, does the jump from 25x60 85mm to 30x70 95mm make a significant improvement when sea-watching, or indeed is the 85mm a better option? For example, I don't know the field of view and it may be the 85 is better. I don't want the 65mm and I think the 115mm may be a bit big, so...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

I thought Lesser Sand Plover was being split this time round? So as we currently stand, still just Greater and Lesser Sand Plover from a British perspective? Scottish Crossbill still a species? Common, Lesser, and Arctic Redpoll all still separate species? Have the BOURC/BBRC indicated changing...

    Passerine - Ilkley Moor

A northern occurrence, (Yorkshire) inland wouldn't be so unusual for Black Redstart. What would make it less likely is the habitat.

Yes, and Ross's Goose. Lammergeier file not yet reached them for review.

Saturn - Jupiter Conjunction Dec 2020

Couple of questions; which direction should I be looking for Saturn and Jupiter, and any particular time? Also the same for Mars? Thanks.

    Thanks all

    Which Muck Boot?

Thoughts on which in the range is best for birding in UK conditions. I'm thinking Muckmaster as more rubber than cloth for wet conditions, but unsure hence the query.

Hills and Holes? Is it still there? Does anyone have any information on it?

I've only been the one time, and that was a few years ago. It's an interesting habitat, but a local would be better placed than me to elaborate, (the Barnack site).

Hills and Holes? Is it still there? Does anyone have any information on it?

Any chance you mean the reserve at Barnack, Cambridgeshire? There's Hills and Holes or Hills and Hollows as I know it. Great for Chalkkhill Blue and Marbled White butterflies and very good for Green Woodpecker. As far as I know it's still there. PE9 3EX is the post code.

Moving from a lister to a finder

Crikey! It would be a nightmare. I'm in Wetherby, so for Spurn I'm really not sure how I'd get to Spurn without using a train. It would be bus from Wetherby to Leeds; that's about an hour, but there's one around 7am. Let's say I connect with an 8.15 train to Hull, another hour, (optimistic). I'd...

Moving from a lister to a finder

Too true. I've heard it said x is such a good finder of rare birds. It's back to that time in the field thing. Stick me on the east coast of Yorkshire, anywhere, between September and October, and my chances will improve compared to how I usually spend that time in front of a computer screen in...

Moving from a lister to a finder

One thing I've noted over the years is that when birds are found, they've generally been showing well. I'm thinking skulking warblers here as an example. The number of times I've been at a twitch and heard people say "how the hell did they find this?" After your two hour vigil when the bird...

Yes, not sure what I saw, but clearly got that mixed up. Thanks.

    Nikon p950 v p1000

Thanks. I think that's what's puzzling me; why the one with the extra reach is cheaper.

    Nikon p950 v p1000

Which model do people feel is best for bird photography? Am I right in thinking the more recent model has a lower optical zoom? Thanks.

Suppression vs reporting; birders’ obligations during lockdown.

Well it's like all the guys you see with the cycling gear on; you're not telling me they get kitted out in all that just to be out an hour. I live on a route to the Yorkshire Dales and they come past early doors; out for a day's cycling I'm sure.

Suppression vs reporting; birders’ obligations during lockdown.

Well it depends. On the gull one would assume that you'd have to study it for a while to make sure it was the real deal. As fishing has been deemed inappropriate, and people have been condemned for sitting on park benches, there's an argument. There's certainly messages on other birds that...

    Corona virus threat to birding

I probably am a bit obsessive when it comes to birding. I'd like to be on Scilly right now, but I'm following Govt. guidelines. I suspect some won't be; maybe they're more obsessive. Anyhow you can watch the news about this virus 24/7 and it probably won't be very good for one's mental state...

    Corona virus threat to birding

It's been said, but happy to emphasise it; the thread is, (should be) about birding during this situation, and not a general discussion about life with the virus, which sadly it has become.

    Corona virus threat to birding

I take your point, but there's an argument that staying at home is a safer bet than both. People shouldn't be shopping unless for essentials, and people shouldn't be birding if there's any social contact.

    Corona virus threat to birding

Hi Steve, it's avoiding social contact. So even on your short trip, if you stopped for petrol, or stopped for a coffee, or came within a couple of metres of other birders, you'd be going against the advice. I guess I'm particularly thinking about news from off-shore islands, which clearly...

    Corona virus threat to birding

Is it still possible to go birding, (other than on foot) and still be compliant with Govt. guidelines? I suppose you could fill up with petrol using gloves, and pay at the pump, make sure you take any food/drink with you, and keep a safe distance from any other birders. However, it's still...

    Nikon Coolpix p900 -v-..........

I have the Coolpix p500 and the Panasonic Lumix fz200. Is it worth investing in the p900? What does it offer extra? Thanks
