Is there such a thing as tagging along a birding tour group for a few days?

Oh yes, I was thinking along the lines of organising something with the company or guide. As you say, easy to surreptitiously sidle a few paces behind a tour group - I did it myself with a group on a cross Biscay ferry (The Company of Whales I think) while their guide pointed out Sperm Whale...

Is there such a thing as tagging along a birding tour group for a few days?

The last two tours I attended were full (as in no room on the bus). I imagine that you might be able to tag along at a particular reserve or special site but I doubt it would be cheap.

Nikon ED78 vs Opticron ES80 GA ED v3

I can’t help as I have never looked through any of the ‘scopes you mention. However, 99.99% of reputable optics dealers who stock a ‘scope that you are interested in will definitely let you examine one and use it (under their supervision). This will allow you to make sure that (if you really...

    My tablet dilemma

I guess you could buy a small (in size) large (in capacity) power bank and when your fire tablet goes winky-wonky plug it in to that. I know that doesn’t fix your problem but seems like a reasonable work around and cheaper than buying an iPad mini.

    Celestron Spotting Scope advice please?

Welcome to the club I wasn’t even aware that Celestron made spotting ‘scopes so can’t offer any insight, sorry. My only recommendation is that you travel to a physical shop if possible and try the 'scopes before you buy.

What Bird can you hear just now?

First singer this morning was (predictably) a Robin. 90 minutes on, and spotting this thread, I opened the back door for 10 minutes and there’s a faint Blackcap on the other side of the stream at the bottom of the garden, a nearer Chiffchaff, a noisy Blackbird and a couple of Great Tit Spring-tastic

    8x32 advice?

I only have 8x32 ELs and only have experience with Hawke 8x32 as an alternative (they live in the boot of my car) My only advice would be to get the binoculars in your hands and make absolutely sure that you actually like them. Forget the manufacturer’s specifications for a few seconds and be...

Should I buy ELs now or wait for more new product releases this year?

I have a second hand pair of 8.5x42 ELs (bought to replace my 10x42 ELs) plus a second hand pair of 8x32 ELs - in my humble opinion you will not regret buying a pair of ELs

Digiscoping with android phone vs with mirrorless DLSR- advice please?

Hello and welcome I can’t answer all your questions I have done "phonescoping" but never owned a camera that could do the job. However, I can tell you is that some great results are possible using your phone. Granted, it will take some practice but it won’t take long for you to achieve decent...

Which monocular as a substitute for binoculars...?

Good Luck with your recovery. I had an operation on my right eye to attempt to repair a epiretinal membrane. It worked reasonably well and my sight is now better than it was when I started using glasses (57 years ago), although I now have reading glasses. During recuperation from the operation...

    Binoculars around £1000

In my experience nothing can beat physically holding and looking through a pair of binoculars. Some fantastic choices in that range, the RSPB binoculars are reasonably good value for the price. It’s worth looking through second hand pairs of Leica, Swarovski and Zeiss binoculars which should be...
