Both are good, Castle espie is 2 miles outside Comber, and would be better if you are bringing the boy as there is a good centre but Oxford Island is free. Check on irishbirding.com to see if anything has been about. Roger

It's not really, I have a pair that frequent my garden (at Lisnagelvin) and I often see them feeding at night, by the light of a streetlight. Roger

Hi everyone, had a really unusual sighting today. I was driving to Belfast and had just entered the north end of the M22 when a JAY flew across the motorway from one clump of trees to another. Anybody seen a Jay on a motorway before? Rgds Roger

Hi cidereduck, been a while since I looked in on this thread, so I am only seeing your post now. Nice to see that someone else from down home is interested. True about the buzzards, although when I left Shrigley in the 1970's they were unknown, I remember having to go to Rathlin Island to...

    Northern Ireland Local Patch

Hi everybody, was visiting Shrigley yesterday, and was able to get a quick run out to see the Barrow's. Had heard it was best seen from the hide or further down near the yacht club, but when I got there two birders from Louth, going by their red van, told me that it was actually showing at the...

    Romania Revisited

Hi Lou, thanks for the comments; regarding the Caspian, the first that I claimed was the third posibility that I had seen, and really it was the closeness of the michahelis that helped me decide for certain. I had been watching the Caspian for about 10 minutes and was certainly happier about it...

Hi folks, was in Scotland at the weekend depositing our daughter at University and managed to get a run out to a place called Musselburgh, just east of Edinburgh. Had only a short time but it proved very fruitful. The highlights were Common and Velvet Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Slavonian Grebe...

    Glasgow in September

David just a note of thanks for suggesting Musselburgh. I was there on Sunday and while I had only a short time, I really enjoyed it. I got Velvet and Common Scoter, Long-tailed duck, Red-throated diver and Slavonian grebe, as well as lots of other more common stuf. I was told by a local...

    Romania Revisited

Hi Diana, no, it was more of an economic self-help project. Through a Romanian living here we got involved in raising funds for a chicken barn which is now built and providing employment - and chickens - to a deprived rural area. The profit is being reinvested to build more of the same. Rgds...

Hi Folks finally got to the Bann to see the Wilson's Phalarope, a lovely bird and really fun to watch with its strange feeding action. Had been in Donegal at the end of last week and at Malin head, at various times got Great, Cory's and Sooty Shearwater and a Great Skua. Really productive few...

Hi Adrian, I know what you mean, there is another road down the other side of the lough, but I don't know how to get to the lough from it. I must investigate it in situ some time. As for the tern, it could be either Common, Artic or Sandwich, all are quite usual in that part of Donegal...

Hi Norma, Nice day by the sound of it, I was at Fanad Head this afternoon, and the only interesting bird was a single Cory's Shearwater. The weather was just too good, with very light winds and clear blue sky. Also saw a small pod of dolphins. Rgds Roger
