    Bird on pole?

I saw this bird in Ottawa, Ontario a few weeks ago. I think it's a Red-tailed Hawk but I can't be certain. Can anyone confirm? I know the images are poor but I was driving by in my car at the time and had to make do with my cell phone camera.

    Sparrow ID?

Yes, now I see it is definitely a White-throated Sparrow. Thanks!

    Sparrow ID?

Can someone please ID this bird for me. Sadly, it flew into my window this afternoon and died on impact. I live in Ottawa, Ontario.

    Red-tailed Hawk? (Ottawa, ON)

Ok, that's what I suspected. Thanks!

    Red-tailed Hawk? (Ottawa, ON)

Saw it perched by side of busy road this morning while driving - low quality pics were best I could do with cell phone. Big bird, medium-dark brown with white on breast. I only saw it perched but it looked like it had a patch of red near base of tail when viewed from the back. I've seen a...

    Nashville Warbler?

Ok, thanks for confirming Nashville Warbler. Merlin gets it right again!

    Nashville Warbler?

Location is Ottawa, Canada. Saw it on a tree outside my home this afternoon. Merlin IDs it as a Nashville Warbler, but could it be an immature female Mourning Warbler, Yellow Warbler, or Common Yellowthroat?

    Sparrow ID

Thanks! My best guess was a juvenile House Sparrow, which surprisingly, is missing from my list....so I can now add it. The woodpecker was medium-sized (8-9 inches maybe) and had a pretty long bill, so I'm now sure it's a Hairy - I've already seen plenty of those so there's no need for a...

    Sparrow ID

Can someone please ID this sparrow for me (I assume it's a sparrow)? Location is Ottawa, ON. I'm sure it's something very common but it doesn't seem to fit song sparrow, white-crowned, house or chipping. I also have a picture of a woodpecker - I think it's a Hairy but I'm wondering if it could...

    Small Grey Birds

I had thought of Starlings but was convinced these birds were grey, but I suppose they are somewhat brown. So, Starling it is.

    Unknow Bird Song

Yes, it's the one that is heard from 0:03-0:06. Thanks for your ID.

    Small Grey Birds

I didn't realize starlings could be grey (I thought they were black and/or brown.

    Small Grey Birds

I recently saw these small grey birds in front of my home in Ottawa. At first I assumed they were Dark-eyed Juncos but they seem a bit larger and with longer beaks, so I'm not sure what species they are and they may be a new sighting for me. Can someone please help ID them? Thanks.

    Unknow Bird Song

I saw this bird at Mud Lake in Ottawa this morning. It was small, had a grey back and whitish belly with a black patch on the upper part of its breast. I was too far away to get a good photo but I did record its song. Both photo and audio file are attached. Photo won't help much with ID but...

    Wren & Crane ID

I had considered Carolina Wren but there is no white eyebrow stripe. Also very unlikely to see one in my area. The wrens are nesting in my backyard so I'll try to get a better picture and hopefully listen to their song.

    Wren & Crane ID

Beak is also fairly long. Here it is sticking out of a nest box....and another pic of the tail, along with a pale breast.

    Wren & Crane ID

I'm hoping to get a confirmation on two bird IDs. I saw the wren the other day in my back yard (Eastern Ontario) and I'm pretty sure it's a House Wren, but could it be a Winter Wren? The crane was in a field on Manitoulin Island last August. I think it's a Sandhill Crane, which are very...

    Unknown Coastal Birds

I'm new to birding and I would definitely be on the purist side of things, so I can certainly appreciate your point. For example, I wouldn't ID a bird based solely on its song - I want to see the bird. I think I'm ok with identifying a juvenile, however, as long it's 100% clear.

    Unknown Coastal Birds

This makes sense to me, and since this is the first Herring Gull (of any type) I've seen, I can add it to my list without worrying about subspecies. Thanks to everyone for your assistance.

    Unknown Coastal Birds

I don't suppose it's possible to confirm (100%) that it's American based on my two pictures? If not, I'll still go with American since it's so much more likely than one of the other species.

    Unknown Coastal Birds

    Ok, thanks for the clarification.

    Unknown Coastal Birds

This is the first Herring Gull I've seen and it was in Quebec, so if I were to use the IOC classification system then it must be an American Herring Gull, since the other species are all outside North America. Does this make sense?
