    8x42 DBA VHD+ Monocular

Well, it’s been just over three months since I parted with my £289 in return for this remarkable little gadget. I wanted something small and light that I could take anywhere. When I first started using it, it felt very strange compared to my binoculars. But I soon got used to the view and...

    This mornings feathered friends

So far this morning I have seen one soggy magpie and one soggy crow. The crow seems to have gone home back to the dry, but Mr Magpie is still perched on the satellite dish oblivious to the wet stuff.

    Waterproof hats

I’ve got one of those suede/leather Aussie type hats. Experimented with Barbour thorn proof wax dressing - rubbed it in all over the hat, so the hat looked shiny. Blasted it with a hair drier so the wax absorbed. No longer shiny and repels water like anything.

    DBA VHD+ 8x42 Monocular

Well after spending some time deliberating on a birthday Leica Monovid or an Opticron DBA VHD+ 8x42, I settled for the Opticron. Had my first chance to use it tonight when the cloud disappeared. All I can say is WOW !! The crescent moon was crisp and bright with zero colour fringing. The...

    Good Boots

I’m after a good pair of tough waterproof leather boots. I have seen a decent looking set of Buckler rigger boots, but am open to suggestions. Have about £100-£130 or so to spend. UK based.

    Today’s sightings

Here is the Welsh valleys I have today spotted a couple of drenched, soggy and depressed magpies who look about as happy with this weather as me. Poor little blighters. I’d buy them a wet suit if they knew how to use one.

    Best UK bird guide

Not sure if I’m asking this in the right forum, but birthday is coming up and I’m going to ask the missus for a new UK bird guide book. Any advice on the best one ? Currently I am looking at the RSPB guide which appears to have sketches of the birds and the Collins guide which seems more...

Monoculars - anyone use these things ?

Hi all, Anyone use monoculars ? They seem handy enough to carry about with you anywhere, as opposed to binoculars, so ideal for buses, train commutes or even walking with the missus. If anyone does use them, any suggestions. I’ve always wanted a Leica, and can afford the 8x20 monovid, but me...

    Zeiss Dialyt 18-45 x 65

Hi All, I bought one of these a while ago, but haven’t used it much until recently. Wow ! What a piece of kit. Built like a brick privvy. I have used it for terrestrial daytime and astronomical purposes. Very little CA, even when looking at a bright moon. Even got the disc of Jupiter and the...

    New low light weatherproof binoculars

I’m in the market for a new pair of low light weather proof binoculars, either 7x50 or 8x56. I have a very nice pair of 1980s CZJ Dekarems 10x50 which I use in the summer in nice weather, but not being nitrogen purged etc, nice pair of winter binos required. So far I am looking at Fujinon 7x50...

    “New” binoculars

Well, after spending a good few months looking for some new binoculars, have just bought a set of Carl Zeiss Jena Dekarem 1Q 10x50 (with the T3M coatings) which were on sale from a reputable dealer for not a bad price. Photos and a review to come when they arrive.

    New binoculars

My 7x50 Soviet pair suffered a bang and damage (non repairable) so I am now looking for a new pair. So far the Hawke 8x56, GPO 8x56, and Fujinon 7x50 FMTR SX and possibly Nikon 7x50 Tropical/ProStar (although I have read that the Fujinon are better) are the front runners. I will be using them...

    Binoculars ideas

Hi All, So I have a pair of Zomz 7x50 USSR binos from 1976 and a pair of 16x70 Fujinon Polaris which I will never part with. I am looking for a pair of wearable binos which are weather proof, especially rain, and excellent for scanning. At the moment, based on my current possessions, I am...

    Help me out here…

Hi All, I’ve posted about this before, but thought I’d ask for a prod in the right direction again. I got £1500 quid for a scope. Choices are a used Swarovski AT80 HD for £1000, a used Leica Televid at £1400, a new Vortex Razor 85 HD any £1399 or a new Zeiss 18-45x65 fieldscope at £1250. I’ve...

    Zeiss Dialyt 18-45x60

So difficult to find a Zeiss dealer in the Uk with one of these in stock that you could try before buying. After exhausting all photo/camera shops within 100 miles, no luck with TryZeiss.com, surprisingly found help from a local gun shop who have several scopes for me to try including the Zeiss...

    Spotting scope opinions please

I am in the market for a spotting scope to add to my team of a Soviet (Zomz I think) 7x50 binoculars and Fujinon 16x70 FMTs. I am currently looking at either a Zeiss Dialyt or Vortex Razor 85. I’ve always wanted to own a Zeiss, but have read some horror stories about their customer service. And...
